The climate crisis is accelerating.
Siberia is home to literally the coldest city in the world, Yakutsk, where temps hang out around -40° for >three months a year. (side fact: -40° is the same in F and C)
It hit 118°F (47.8°C) in Siberia this week. livescience.com/arctic-circle-…
It hit 121°F (49.6°C) in Canada this week, marking the second day in a row that surpassed their all-time heat record and smashing the world record for latitude 50N by >5°C.
Before yesterday, greater than 45°C had never been recorded.
Had a call this morning with people in Canada, South Africa, France and Germany, and honestly New Zealand I cannot emphasise enough how different our lives are right now compared to the rest of the world, how fortunate we are and how much we have to be grateful for rn. [Rant 🧵]

For the past month, I've been so so so grateful to live in New Zealand. THREAD WITH GROSS GENERALISATIONS AHEAD
Number 1: We have competent and respected leadership. @jacindaardern has been communicating transparently, consistently, calmly and decisively since the crisis began.
Number 2: Largely as a function of number 1, public trust is high. People here are not suspicious of what the politicians or the medical professionals are saying. It helps that outstanding communicators like @SiouxsieW and @medickinson are applying their superpowers to the cause.
