Time to turn on notifications -- I've been working for several weeks on a comprehensive investigation into DEI/lowering of standards at the @SecretService -- a mess current USSS Director Sean Curran inherited from his predecessor Kim Cheatle, who was forced to resign after her disastrous Congressional testimony about the J13 Butler failures.

I'll have a lengthy story filled with more exclusive information either tomorrow morning or in the coming days.

The broad question is whether Curran is doing anything to shake up the old culture and improve recruiting/retention a la @SecofWar Pete Hegseth.

My upcoming comprehensive piece will provide some answers.

Here's a SNEAK PEAK re: the pre-Butler DEI/cultural rot at the agency charged with protecting Pres. Trump.

The Center to Advance Security in America, or CASA, @SecureUSA, pursued several Freedom of Information Act requests for the number of DEI/LGBTQ+ junkets Secret Service leaders and other agents took during the Biden admin.

(Context: Unlike the U.S. military under Hegseth, the Secret Service has not banned trans agents from its ranks. And, in fact, this year has made some physical-fitness accommodations for at least one of them, which I previously reported.)

CASA Director James Fitzpatrick said the response to the FOIA requests show that the Biden Secret Service prioritized "DEI over almost everything."

"They were more worried about whether their agency was becoming 'trans inclusive' and able to decipher the 'gay alphabet' then they were about executing the mission of the Secret Service and keeping high-level government officials and candidates safe," Fitzpatrick said.

"Shortly after this five-person junket to Australia to learn about transgenderism, the Secret Service denied Bobby Kennedy's request for protection for the first time. This is unacceptable and our team will not stop until all of the DEI records of the Biden Secret Service are released to the American people."

Here's just some of the detailed findings:
⬇️⬇️⬇️ For three days in late January and early February 2023, the USSS sent five employees – including Andrew Murphy, the Special Agent in Charge of the Boston Field Office, who is openly gay, to the 2023 World LGBTIQ+ Conference for Criminal Justice Professionals in Melbourne, Australia.

Among the sessions attended by the Secret Service staff were:
•  Understanding Bias Towards Transgender Police and Transgender Homicide Victims
•  Becoming a Trans Inclusive Police Service
•  A Comprehensive Guide to Supporting Transgender, Non-binary and Two-spirit Employees
Transitioning in the Workplace
•  Beyond The Gay Alphabet - Why Understanding The LGBTQIA+ Community's Experience is Crucial to  Effective Modern-Day Policing
•  Modelling Workplace Identities: Negotiating The Risk Of Professional Stigma Within Contemporary  Policing Contexts

The attendees listed several "takeaways" from the conference - among them were:
-Transgender/Gender Non-Conforming Human Resources Guidance
-That they wanted to "incorporate best practices" into USSS HR
-They wanted to create "policy and training" to "provide officers and agents guidance regarding searching/patting-down transgender or gender non-conforming persons."

The group requested a meeting with then-Director Cheatle to discuss proposed “action items” as a follow-up from what they learned at the conference.

🚨🚨#BREAKING and EXCLUSIVE: What is the Secret Service doing about DEI in the new Trump meritocracy era?

A @SecretService Uniformed Division officer allegedly fell asleep on the job -- in full public view -- while providing security at the United Nations General Assembly last Thursday, multiple law enforcement sources told @RCPolitics.

The same officer, an overweight African American man, also has been accused of leaving his semi-automatic rifle (what appears to be a SR16) unattended while taking a bathroom break from his security duties, according to these sources.

New York Police Department officers witnessed and took photos of what they considered the officer’s unprofessional behavior — what they described as sleeping on the job and leaving the rifle unattended — and reported it to their superiors at the multi-agency command center, which included representatives from the Secret Service, the NYPD, and other law enforcement agencies.

A Secret Service spokesperson told @RCPolitics that the USSS Uniformed Division officer was relieved of his operational duties “immediately after leadership was notified” of the alleged unprofessional behavior, and the officer returned to Washington, D.C.

The Secret Service has placed the officer on administrative leave pending a disciplinary review and emphasized its “strict professional standards” and stated that those who violate these standards will face immediate “disciplinary action.”

@RCPolitics was unsuccessful in its efforts to reach out to the individual accused of unprofessional conduct while providing security at UNGA. The New York Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

RealClearPolitics was alerted to the Secret Service officer’s alleged unprofessional behavior just hours after @SecofWar Pete Hegseth lectured U.S. military leaders about the need to raise standards and eliminate “woke” DEI priorities in hiring and promotions.

There will be no “fat troops” or “fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon,” Hegseth said. Troops will be clean-shaven, and the military will offer few if any exemptions, either for religious or medical needs. There will be only male physical standards for combat jobs, and if that means there are no women in those roles, “it is what it is,” Hegseth said.

Hegseth’s stricter standards for the military is ratcheting up the pressure on other federal agencies to raise their own standards, including the Secret Service.

Even before the Butler assassination attempt against President Trump, the Secret Service was facing Congressional scrutiny over its DEI hiring and vetting policies during the Biden administration. Since Butler, one Secret Service agent, Rashid Ellis, has come forward publicly to blame last year’s agency failures during Butler on the Secret Service’s DEI priorities; many other agents and officers have made the same allegations to me anonymously.

It’s unclear what actions Secret Service Director Sean Curran has taken to address the DEI concerns beyond placing a number of Secret Service officials who worked on USSS DEI programs during the Biden years on administrative leave earlier this year in compliance with Trump’s anti-DEI directive. The Secret Service has not responded to repeated questions from @RCPolitics on this topic.

🚨🚨 Why did the @SecretService allow Pres. Trump and Melania to get stalled on an escalator today at the @UN General Assembly before his speech without moving quickly to protect the leader of the free world and his wife?

The stalled escalator with President Trump and first lady Melania stuck on it was a classic set up for an assasination hit, yet the Secret Service barely noticed and didn't pull POTUS and FLOTUS off the suddenly stopped stairs, Secret Service sources warn.

So while Trump and his @TheJusticeDept, @AGPamBondi, and the @SecretService celebrate Ryan Routh's conviction, the president's security team with its ZERO-FAIL mission need to be ever-vigilant.

Today could have been a horrible split screen.

Sources in the Secret Service community are very concerned about what they witnessed from fellow agents today when President Trump was stalled and vulnerable. It's a similar critique to the Secret Service's delayed response in getting Trump off stage after a bullet grazed his ear on July 13. Yes, the stalled escalator was an @UN security failure, but the @SecretService did nothing to respond to the obvious security threat.

@RichStaropoli2, a former Secret Service agent who headed up the USSS security teams for the U.N. General Assembly multiple times, tells me the Secret Service agents surrounding Trump should have closed ranks around him and Melania when the escalator abruptly stopped -- then they should have quickly moved him off the escalator either up or down as quickly as possible.

"This is not hard. Don't just stand there," Starapoli said. "That's the issue.

"Look, they should have closed ranks right around there, as close as you can be. And you know what? Somebody's got to make a call. We're going to stand here like a bunch of morons, like we did in Butler. Or are we going to scoop up the first lady and POTUS and either go down or go up?"

🚨🚨EXCLUSIVE and #BREAKING: This is a current Secret Service agent, stating in a Facebook post, that Charlie Kirk deserved what he got.

"You can't circumvent karma, [sic] she doesnt [sic] leave."

The comments are similar to the incendiary remarks now former @MSNBC contributor Matthew Dowd made on the network. The network fired Dowd from his contributorship yesterday for saying "hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions."

MSNBC called Dowd's comments "insensitive and unacceptable" and ultimately fired him.

The Secret Service agent's post is circulating in the Secret Service community with some agents upset over his sentiments because he appears to be celebrating the death of a political figure, and one whom the president is honoring with the Presidential Medal of Freedom and has often had by his side at events over the last several years.

Trump and others also credit Kirk with Trump's victory at the polls through the work he did rallying young people on college campuses and getting them out to vote.

What about other MAGA figures who often appear with Trump -- would the agent's political views prevent him from protecting Trump effectively or anyone who may be targeted while appearing with Trump or another administration official?

"If that's all it takes to set you off, that's dangerous to have around," one source in the Secret Service community told @RCPolitics about the agent's Facebook post on Kirk's death.

"I'm mostly concerned about the morals of a person sworn to protect the rights of others to engage in politics and exercise free speech, celebrating the death of someone exercising those same rights," the source added.

Several of the agent's Facebook posts negatively comment on Trump, his administration, and its policies, but nothing that I've reviewed is as pointed and offensive as this agent's post about Kirk's death.

I'm told this agent, who is in Phase 2 of his career, is not on a detail that would be regularly charged with protecting Trump. Yet, all agents, at times, are called off their official details/duties to contribute to presidential coverage of some kind or another.

In 2017, I reported on a now-retired senior agent named Kerry O'Grady who suggested in a Facebook post just weeks before the 2016 election that she wouldn't take a bullet for Trump. The Secret Service placed O'Grady, then the boss of the Denver Field Office, on paid administrative for nearly two years to allow her to hit her retirement date. She left the agency in 2019 with full pension benefits.

In the Wednesday Facebook post, the Secret Service agent, Anthony Pough, justifies his "karma" comments by making a blanket statement that "Charlie Kirk spews hate and racism on his show and adding the words: "Charlie Kirk says black women do not have the brain processing power."

It's an undeniably controversial subject matter, but the broad statement Pough referred to didn't include the full context.

These are Kirk's full comments in July 2023 after the Supreme Court declared affirmative action programs at public and private colleges and universities are unconstitutional.

Joy Reid, Michelle Obama, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Kentanji Jackson ― an MSNBC host, former first lady, U.S. representative, and Supreme Court justice, respectively — had all expressed strong disagreement with the ruling.

Kirk:
"You really have to wonder. In fact, you know, if we would have said three weeks ago, Blake, if we would have said that Joy Reid and Michelle Obama and the late Rep. Sheila Jackson, Lee and Ketanji Brown Jackson were affirmative action picks, we would have been racist, but now they're coming out, and they're saying it for us."

"They're coming out and they're saying, 'I'm only here because [of] affirmative action.'"

He then played footage of Jackson Lee, stating that she was a "clear recipient of affirmative actions, and particularly in higher education," but insisting that she graduated on her own merits.

Kirk then added this response, appearing to refer to Jackson Lee, who had just spoken in the clip he shared with his audience:

"Yeah, we know you do not have the brain processing power to otherwise be taken really seriously. You had to go steal a white person's slot to go be taken somewhat seriously."

“It’s very obvious to us that you were not smart enough to be able to get in on your own,” he added. Here are some other criticisms/rants re: Trump and his administration's anti-DEI policies that USSS agent Anthony Pough posted on Facebook this year.

NEW WHITE HOUSE BALLROOM IN THE WORKS: @PressSec announces the construction of a new White House ballroom in the East Wing that will have the capacity to hold 650 people rather than the 200 that the White House can now hold.

The pricetag is $200 million, and Trump and other donors have committed to paying for it.

🚨SECRET SERVICE SCOOP: Another 🤯Who signed off on the Butler security plan the day before the Butler rally even though there were discrepancies on how the AGR building roof would be covered in the plan?

Would you be surprised to learn it was:
Sean Curran, the head of the Donald Trump campaign detail, along with a supervisor for the Butler rally on his same Donald Trump detail, Nick Menster, and an inspector who was acting in a supervisory role, Nick Olszweksi, sources in the Secret Service community tell me.

All three got big promotions after Butler. Curran is obviously the Secret Service director, Menster is the No. 2 on the Lara and Eric Trump detail, and Olszweski, is ironically in charge of the Inspections Division, which falls under the Office of Professional Responsibility and ironically is charged with maintaining accountability and integrity for all USSS operations.

Who promoted the two Nicks? Curran.

None of those three supervisors received ANY discipline, but the two top bosses n he Pittsburgh Field Offices took the fall. They were disciplined, along with two other agents on their team, although all the disciplinary actions were slaps on the wrist.

Considering all of the above -- I find it highly interesting/relevant that @RandPaul's new report highlights this fact: "Details on these disciplinary actions were withheld from the Committee until Chairman Paul issued a subpoena for them on July 1, 2025. The American people deserve better."

They withheld it until 12 days before the one-year anniversary of the horrific Butler rally. This was under a Trump-appointed director -- Curran.

Two of those individuals received lighter punishments than initially recommended. These documents further contradict statements made by former Director of USSS, Kimberly Cheatle’s testimony to the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform."

🚨🚨#BREAKING AND EXCLUSIVE: @RCPolitics has obtained video of the fight between two women Secret Service Uniformed Division Officers outside former President Obama's residence last week after one officer called a supervisor to come before "I whoop this girl's ass."

The skirmish is raising new questions about whether DEI is still plaguing the USSS despite Trump's directive to abolish it.

The Secret Service has not responded to my inquiries on whether these two officers are being disciplined and/or are still on the job. 👉👉A change -dot - org petition that is circulating among the Secret Service community, desperately calling for DEI and nepotism reforms at the agency.

Here is some of the text of the most recent petition, calling on @SecretService Director Sean Curran to make major reforms:
"Government-wide DEI policies being pushed by Agency heads to further the Obama and Biden administrations' radical agenda are to blame for the lowered standards at Secret Service and the tragic events of J13", critics decried.

Although Rowe and Cheatle may have had good intentions, unfortunately they lost sight of the protective mission and their misguided DEI agenda had employed radical methods that resulted in many unqualified candidates not being properly vetted due to Tokenism (the practice of making a symbolic effort in the targeted recruitment of people from underrepresented groups regardless of merit in order to give the appearance of sexual or racial equality within the workforce) which still continues.

This double-standard at the Secret Service is not only discriminatory and unfair, but is also dangerous and leaves the Agency vulnerable to insider threats and breaches in security.  Additionally, Tokenism is divisive and does a disservice to those truly qualified individuals who have earned their rightful place within the Agency based on merit, because when a Token inevitably fails the mission it only feeds the stereotypical false narrative that undermines the credibility of the rest of the group the Token is seen as representing.

However, it's been over three months into the Trump 2.0 administration. And while the Secret Service does have a new Director, many of these same critics are now questioning why it's still business as usual with accountability and reforms not happening nor an immediate house cleaning as was promised.

During a recent Question & Answer Segment with newly appointed Director Curran by Fox News Host Lara Trump, that aired this past Easter weekend, Director Curran was disappointingly not asked the tough questions in what appears to be more of a carefully orchestrated public relations infomercial aimed at changing the Agency's negative public image instead of a credible interview.

🚨🚨 NEW: The Secret Service can force James Comey to be interviewed about his threatening social media post about Trump, according to two Secret Service sources.

If he refuses to comply with their request for what's known as a protective intelligence interview, the Secret Service case agent can apply for a subpoena through the assistant U.S. attorney and force him to answer their questions.

As an attorney, he will likely refuse to be interviewed without hiring an attorney and having that person present to provide counsel before answering Secret Service agents' questions.

On the other hand, Comey could agree to demonstrate how open and transparent he is and agree to cooperate and sit down for an interview. Normally, the Secret Service treats these types of investigations into social media threats against sitting presidents very seriously. They are usually high-priority cases, and agents try to quickly locate the person who made the online threat and conduct a protective intelligence interview. These are usually in-person interviews.

Whether to immediately move forward with an attempt to conduct a protective intelligence interview depends on the USSS's threat assessment. If they believe Comey, or anyone else posting similar threatening messages about Trump, really does pose a danger to POTUS.

Prior to the protective intelligence interviews, agents gather fingerprints of the person, photos, and as much history about them, including residences lived in, spouses, family, etc.

🚨SECRET SERVICE SCOOP: A woman special agent trainee on Wednesday shot herself in the leg at the Secret Service's Rowley Training Center and was airlifted to a Baltimore hospital emergency room, according to multiple sources in the Secret Service community.

Developing...I'll provide more details about the circumstances of how and why this occurred when they become available.

The incident occurred amid deep concerns that the Secret Service's DEI policies contributed to the failures on J13 and created an opening for Thomas Crooks to assassinate Trump and kill rallygoer Corey Comperatore.

Under the Biden administration's sweeping DEI executive order, former Secret Service Dir. Kimberly Cheatle signed onto the 30x30 national DEI initiative.

It calls for all law enforcement agencies in the country to have at least 30% of their forces be women by the year 2030. One of the reasons? Because women make fewer arrests. This 30x30 initiative and the way Cheatle is implementing it in hiring decisions and training qualifications was a major focus of an online petition and its whistleblowers’ concerns that it was impacting Secret Service training, readiness, and performance. This petition was circulating BEFORE the assassination attempts against Trump.

I'm told by the time Cheatle left under pressure from Congress after J13, she boosted women agents and uniformed officers to 24% -- just 6% shy of the 30x30 pledge.

‼️‼️Decision to Cancel Outdoor Inauguration Events -- Weather or Security Related? + other Security Concerns:

Over the last 24 hrs numerous colleagues and friends have asked me what Secret Service sources are saying about the cancellation of outdoor events for President-elect Trump's inauguration. I will give you the unvarnished report of what I'm hearing while being extremely sensitive about trying not to make attendees more jittery than they already are.

Most USSS sources I've discussed this with are sticking to the stiff upper lip, curt response: The cancellations are simply weather-related.

But a few sources I trust have said the extreme weather is good cover to make things much safer because of the heightened security environment. The Secret Service has a zero-fail mission, and there is absolutely no room for errors. The USSS operates in extreme weather environments all the time -- but it's different when you have hundreds of thousands -- if not more -- people converging near a protectee at an outdoor event after two assassination attempts and several long-term known threats.

What the FBI said Monday -- that it was not tracking any credible threats against the inauguration was laughable-- especially after the ISIS-inspired terrorist who slammed into a crowd on NYE in New Orleans. Trust in the FBI has been completely eroded. Even at Jimmy Carter's ceremonial lying in wait at the capitol, there were two lone actors the U.S. police interdicted trying to disrupt the event -- one with a machete and another who tried to blow up his car near the Capitol, the U.S. Capitol Police chief Thomas Manger said Monday.

👉👉The last inauguration that was conducted inside the Capitol was Ronald Reagan's second swearing-in. Reagan was the only other president in the last four decades to have been shot and nearly killed by a would-be assassin. It occurred during his first term.

Is this simply a coincidence? After what I heard from sources, I don't believe it is.

I'm told by a well-positioned source that there have been deep concerns among some federal law enforcement officials about the open spaces surrounding the capitol where the ticket-holding Inauguration attendees were supposed to be sitting -- whether that area and any area around the Capitol is going to be open to the public -- and if so, why are there no magnetometers being positioned to screen people before they are let in.

Secret Service sources tell me there will be NO ONE allowed in those open spaces on the mall next to the Capitol, and they will have numerous post-standers guarding the perimeter with many security sweeps near the Capitol complex. Everyone inside the Capitol, except members of Congress and Supreme Court justices, will be screened through magnetometers.

If anyone tries to climb the fence with apparent or obvious lethal force (either what looks like an explosive vest or a gun drawn) to get into those areas, they will be shot on the spot, Secret Service sources are telling me. This is one likely reason why a dozen police departments are reportedly refusing to help provide security for the inauguration -- they do not like the Secret Service's aggressive rules of engagement.

The USSS, military, homeland security agents, and national guard are not messing around - no funny business or aggressive actions to scale fences or bring them down will be tolerated.

More information re: Secret Service/police/military treatment of fence-jumpers or anyone attempting to push over the fences protecting open space near the Capitol: the Secret Service and law enforcement will not shoot them as long as they do not appear to have an obvious lethal force (explosive vest, gun, etc.) Instead, they will flood the zone with police/other law enforcement officers and apprehend those fence-jumpers/pushers. This happened at the RNC convention, and the USSS and law enforcement eventually regained control of the fence without any convention attendee getting harmed.

🚨🚨🚨 Important 🧵Both the @StateDept and the @FBI spent several weeks in late August and early September refusing to answer my questions on whether there was a member of the Diplomatic Security Service, @StateDeptDSS the agency that protects our dignitaries abroad, including Secretary of State Antony Bilnken, who was being investigated for spying -- wittingly or unwittingly -- for Iran.

Now we know, thanks to John Schindler, in the substack piece below, that my inquiries were spot on -- and the FBI and the State Department were refusing to confirm my reporting. The man in question, as Schindler revealed yesterday, is Lawrence Casselle.

Casselle served as the DSS regional director for the Near East (2023-24), but I'm told is now on an administrative or work-from-home leave pending the FBI investigation.

He served as chief of staff to the current Diplomatic Services director from from 2021 to 2023 and even as Donald Trump's White National Security Council director for counterterrorism from 2019-2020. He is being accused of having a romantic affair with an Iranian spy. I was told in late August by sources in the DSS community that it was likely an Iranian "honey pot" investigation.

But my question is a very relevant one today, Election Day. Why did the Biden-Harris administration work so hard to block my reporting on the DSS Iranian spying incident -- to flat-out refuse to answer my repeated questions about it during the height of the election campaign and right after Kamala Harris received her nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago? For months, the administration had been facing Iranian spying allegations against senior officials, including Robert Malley, Biden's Iran envoy.

My questions were incredibly pressing at the time because we were learning more about the Iranian assassination attempts against former President Trump - and the Diplomatic Security Services works with the Secret Service often when foreign dignitaries are in the U.S. In fact, the two agencies were working quite closely at the time to prepare for the United Nations General Assembly in New York, an annual event in which the city is flooded by thousands of foreign leaders. This year those dignitaries included Iranian Vice President Javad Zarif. You'll remember that Trump complained that the Secret Service made him scale down an outdoor rally in Wisconsin in late Sept. and move it inside because so many Secret Service were being diverted to help with security for the U.N. General Assembly, including for protection for Zariff and his team.

"We were in Wisconsin yesterday, and except for the fact that the administration would not let us have—we had 50,000, maybe more people, and we were going to do an outdoor rally, and we ended up having to do it inside, in front of about a thousand people," Trump said.

"But they didn't want me to be outside. They said they couldn't get us enough people because they were guarding the United Nations and Iran."

At the time of those remarks, Sen. Chuck Grassley was reporting in granular detail about an FBI investigation into an Iranian plot to kill Trump. In fact, on July 12 -- one day before the assassination attempt in Butler, Pa., the FBI arrested Asif Merchant, a Pakistani national who had recently spent time in Iran plotting Trump's assassination in a safe house. I was on several television and radio shows and podcasts speaking about this Iranian plot against Trump during those late summer weeks.

🚨 WHY did the Secret Service COMMAND CENTER not tell its agents to prevent Trump from going on stage?
After reviewing the local Butler-area law enforcement's After-Action Report, (critical timeline attached to this post), it's still unclear to me if they were communicating with the Secret Service command center or a local command center at 5:45 p.m. when they were sending photos of Crooks to a Beaver County ESU group chat, then recommends they alert "command."

If local law enforcement sent the photos to the Secret Service Command Center, there's no way they should have let Trump out on that stage. ‼️One possible reason for letting Trump go on stage, I'm told from a source within the Secret Service community, is that the USSS Command Center is constantly getting flags of suspicious people --even though pics of Crooks were sent to the Secret Service Command Center at around 5:45 p.m., no one had seen a weapon yet -- so Crooks was flagged as a problem but not a "threat."

.@SenRonJohnson calls his Rowe's morning briefing with senators "forthright," "confidence-building."

Just just got off the phone with Sen. Johnson, who said he was generally "impressed and encouraged" by acting Secret Service Dir. Rowe's briefing his morning.

"He was very forthright, definitely concerned about the morale of the men and women in the service, which I think we all need to be," Johnson told me. "They've got a big task ahead of them, but both he and the FBI Director were really, again, forthright is the best word I can say."

"As I said, this was a confidence-building briefing," Johnson said.

Johnson said he urged Rowe and a top FBI official present to provide more public information so "we don't allow conspiracy theories to spread."

"And I made the point [that] he way to do that is to be open and transparent, hold multiple briefings certainly start out by saying, this is incomplete, it's, preliminary.

"The public cuts you slack, but we need to know things as you know [them], and I think [he] definitely acknowledged that that's a good path to take."

"I think, if his higher ups will allow, I think that's exactly the direction he'd like to take." 2/2 🚨ACTNG SECRET SERVICE DIR. ROWE TELLS SENATORS COUNTER-SNIPER TOOK THE SHOT AS SOON AS HE COULD SEE CROOKS' HEAD, DID NOT WAIT FOR "COMMAND CENTER" PERMISSION.

Instead, a lip of the building was obscuring the shot, and Crooks took two first shots, then ducked beneath the lip, and then popped up for more shots, and that's when the Secret Service counter-sniper shot and killed him.

In my interview with Sen. Johnson, the Wisconsin Republican said he directly asked Secret Service Dir. Rowe if there was ANY delay in when the counter sniper had a shot on Crooks and when he took it because he had to radio back to a USSS command center to get permission.

Johnson told me: "According to him, that's false. ...They had him in sight once he stuck his head up to take the second round of shots.

...They should have told us a long time ago, but from my standpoint, that's the most important thing I learned from the briefing -- it was in response to my question.

More specifics in response to my follow-up question to break down exactly why the CS could not see Crooks:
So there is on [these metal roofs,] at the peak, there's a piece of metal up there. He didn't describe exactly, you know, how high. But when they had somebody [up there crawling then] crouch down, you could only just see the very crown of their head, so you couldn't see the rest of the body.

So, I mean, if you're a sniper, you're scanning things, you might see a dark spot, but not even recognize his head, I suppose... So he was not all that visible, but apparently, he came up above that metal partition, fired off two shots, sinked down below it, then came back up in the exact same location to fire the second round of shots when they took their shot.

So he wasn't in their sights for, you know, minutes, or, you know, even seconds. I mean, [as] soon as they got him in the sights, they basically took the shot. So again, I think that's news.
