I missed a lot of the big stuff this year, which is honestly fine by me. I’ll catch up eventually.

So, that in mind, here are my Top 10 favorite films of 2021!
This year I got an actual job writing (!!!) so I didn't have as much time for freelance reviews, but I managed to write about half of these! Hopefully they're ones you haven't seen that I can convince you are worth your time, or at least are worth thinking about in a new way.
First up, a lot has been written about #TheMatrixResurrections and how it "resents its own existence," but I tried to put it in context of the Wachowskis' anti-cynical oeuvre and how the movie is ABOUT the joys of familiar stories told in new ways.…

“Hafızadaki gerçeklik kurgudan başka bir şey değil mi?”

Lana Wachowski son derece kişisel bir film çekmiş. Filme neresinden baksam kasti olarak uygulanmış bir tavır, eleştiri ve hepsini kapsayan bir “yönetmen tercihi” mevcut. +
Lana Wachowski yıllardır süregelen popüler kültürün Matrix’i tüketmesine, suyunu çıkarmasına, en nihayetinde dev bir metaya dönüşmesinden rahatsız olmuş ki sinematik işleyişine kör göze parmakla, sarkastik bir anlatı dili kurmuş.
Filmde Hollywood eksenli yeni dönem aksiyon-bilim kurgu-fantastik filmlere ciddi eleştiriler var. Hatta filmdeki sinematografik stilin renk paletine kadar bir Marvel filmini anımsatıyor oluşu dikkat çekici detaylar arasında. +

Seamos sinceros.

I honestly would not have *cared* about The Matrix without Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus, the Oracle, Niobe, Lock, the love story between Link and Zee.. yeah Neo and Trinity were very cool and all but they were never cool enough to carry these movies on their own.
Why was first Matrix “so cool”? It wasn’t mainly the visual effects or the costumes or the green tint. It was always BLACK PEOPLE. And especially Laurence Fishburne.
You do the same exact film(s) without any leading Black characters and especially without Laurence Fishburne and you would have gotten a technically dazzling movie that no one cared about.

Final thoughts about #TheMatrix for tonight. The first film is undeniably one of the best movies ever made. And even though I didn't like the 2nd or 3rd, the fact is, the trilogy is one of the most ambitious efforts to delve into profound philosophical ideas on screen -- ever. +
I have distinct perspectives on The Matrix as a fan and as a writer. Like many fans, I was very disappointed by the sequels (until Resurrections). But as a writer and creator.. I have so much fucking respect for the Wachowskis willing their imagination into our actual lives.
Matrix 2 and 3 reminded me that the purpose of art and the purpose of writing is not to please the public. The purpose of art is to express the vision of its creator. Whatever people have to say about that vision is not the artist's business, so to speak..

You've def heard of "The Hero's Journey", the narrative structure dating back to Homer's Odyssey in ~7th century BC.

A great way to learn the framework is comparing scene-by-scene images from 2 modern classics of the story type: "Star Wars" and "The Matrix". #TheMatrix

0/ The "Hero's Journey" was coined by Joseph Campbell, an American literary prof.

He studied ancient myths and found many shared a similar character arc (AKA the "monomyth").

It follows 12 stages, with a hero venturing from an "ordinary world" to a "special world" and back.
1/ Ordinary world

The hero's normal life before the adventure begins:

◻️ Luke Skywalker lives on a farm in Tatooine
◻️ Neo is a corporate slave in The Matrix
