#NovaScotia has dozens of #manganese occurrences and had a bunch of mines in the 1800s and early 1900s, mostly along the south shore of the #BayofFundy.

For example, the Tennycape #manganese deposit (#HantsCounty, #NovaScotia) was discovered in 1861 and manganese was extracted from boulders overlying the bedrock in 1862.

The actual Tennycape Mine opened in 1882 and became the largest official #manganese producer in #NovaScotia, with an estimated 4000 tons of ore reportedly extracted between 1880-1900.

#Manganese was discovered in #NewRoss, #LunenburgCounty, in 1891. The Cain and Riddle mine opened in the late 1890s and the Dean and Chapter mine opened in 1907. Both closed in 1921, but the Dean and Chapter mine operated again from 1929-1936.

Combined they produced a reported 3,000 tons of ore but this is considered a minimum because it wasn’t until 1918 that #manganese was formally declared a mineral under the Mines Act so reporting prior to then wasn't required.

They, and the Cain and Riddle mine in particular, are likely NS' biggest-producing #manganese mines. They are still the deepest and most extensive underground manganese mines in #Canada.

The #NewRoss deposit is one of only two known #manganese deposits in the world that are hosted in granite and large enough to be mined. (The other is in France.) Most manganese deposits around the world are in sediments.

The village of #ManganeseMines, northeast of #Truro, was named for obvious reasons, although its production in the 1800s was actually quite small.

Most mined #manganese is used in steel-making. It makes steel stronger and more flexible so it can be used in things like railway tracks, safes and rifle barrels.
Manganese is also a key ingredient in #rechargeablebatteries used in things like #electriccars.
