India is in the mid-level ranking for COVID-19 safety index, which includes four quadrants: quarantine efficiency, government management efficiency, monitoring & detection and emergency treatment readiness. Thailand & India are similar in the GHS index and COVID-19 safety index.

In this graph, only Thailand is there. India & Thailand are above average in GHS but poor in COVID-19 safety index.
Countries like Australia and South Korea rank well on both indices, top performers in #GHS
#UK #US are not in the top 40 performers in the Covid-19 safety index

Countries such as Austria, China, Hungary, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates perform better on the Covid-19 Safety Index than what could be “predicted” by their GHS ranks.

India & Thailand performed much better than what they are ranked in GHS

GHS overestimated preparedness & capacity of France, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The preparedness of Germany & South Korea is underestimated.

We can’t draw any conclusions based on #GHS on how well the countries have performed in managing #covid19

We need new ways to assess the preparedness. Focus on
1. Leadership (Political Will)
2.Surveillance of Priority Conditions on integrated platform
3. Overall strength of Public health system
4. Standardization & Interoperability
5. Use of Technology
6. Partnerships & Resources

Enhanced case detection and reduced transmission of highly infectious diseases such as COVID-19 possible due to:

Multipronged surveillance strategy
Flexible system to adapt innovations
Strong leadership
Public health workforce
Collaboration
Research
Use lessons from past
