/6 #PHAC’s National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) partnered with researchers in Manitoba to study 90 samples taken from Manitobans with #COVID19 at different points of time from 0 to 21 days after symptom onset.

/6 #COVID19 diagnostic tests (RT-PCR) detect viral particles (RNA) that can remain in the body for varying lengths of time following infection. The study looked at samples to see if they contained live virus capable of infecting others.

/6 The study showed that patient samples taken from the day symptoms started to 8 days after symptom onset could still infect test cells (Vero cells) in culture but samples collected >8 days after symptom onset did not infect test cells. #COVID19

/6 This is the largest study of #SARS-CoV-2 #infectivity of its kind. Findings support current #publichealth recommendations to isolate #COVID19 cases in the community for at least 10 days after symptom onset.

/6 Studies like this strengthen the #science for evidence-based decision-making to control #COVID19. Additional & larger studies of #SARS-CoV-2 #infectivity will help us learn more about when people are most likely to spread the virus.
