Someone asked, "Are people with #GenotypeAA more prone to #Malaria?"
Let's quickly answer this.

A thread 🧵

{Share to create awareness!}

Yes! People with #genotypeAA are more prone to malaria.

Reason:
The commonest parasite that causes #malaria (Plasmodium falciparum) loves plenty of #blood & #oxygen.

Since AA is the perfect #genotype with plenty of blood & oxygen, the parasite prefers AA blood.

There's a substance in blood called #hemoglobin. It carries oxygen to your tissues.

People with #genotypeAA have the perfect hemoglobin & hence plenty of oxygen in it. That's why malaria parasite prefers infecting them instead of people with AS & SS.

(The parasite wise abi!)

In fact, studies found that children with genotypes:

AA: 92.3% susceptible to malaria

AS: 5.1%

SS: 2.6%

You can see the difference, right?

But be warned. Malaria is more deadly in persons with #GenotypeSS coz it can cause life-threatening #SickleCellCrisis.

This crisis doesn't occur in people with normal genotype AA.
