#TodayinHistory in 1990, 30 years ago, a violent #earthquake hits Luzon #PH w/ magnitude-7.8. It wrecked havoc in Agoo, Baguio, Cabanatuan, Dagupan & select areas in La Union. The tragic episode provided #PH w/ invaluable lessons in disaster prep. (THREAD) #kasaysayan
Context: At 4:26 pm, a violent earthquake shook north and central #Luzon, lasting for about a minute. The epicenter was near the town of Rizal, Nueva Ecija, and it produced a 125 km-long ground rupture that stretched from Dingalan, Aurora to Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya.
The #earthquake tremors were so violent that it crumbled many buildings & roads in #Baguio, cutting it off from the rest of #PH for around 48 hrs. It was the biggest earthquake in #PH since 1976, and in northern Luzon in a century.
It caused massive blackouts in Luzon, with Manila being affected. The scale of the destruction (US $369M worth) & human casualty (2,412 lives) was so great that it led to a reassessment of the existing gov policies in disaster risk reduction.
One of the calamity's legacy is the Panagbenga Festival in Baguio City. The term is a word in Kankana-ey meaning "a time of blooming," a call back to the destruction of Baguio from the earthquake in 1990 and how the city slowly rose again & recovered.
