There are fingers of flysch reaching into the sea at #GreenBay Beach, #Lunenburg County. Flysch is a sedimentary rock, meaning it was formed from sediments.
Lear more about it in this thread!

Flysch is a sedimentary rock, meaning it was formed from sediments such as mud, silt and sand that were compressed into rock. Much of southern #NovaScotia is underlain by flysch and you can see it at places like #theOvens, Taylor's Head Provincial Park...

...Western Head by #Liverpool and #BlueRocks by #Lunenburg. You can recognize flysch because it has this great layered look.
Flysch forms in offshore basins adjacent to continents. Underwater sediments, like those being deposited offshore Atlantic Canada today...

...from rivers and streams, are occasionally disturbed by minor seismic activities that result in large amounts of sediment flowing down underwater slopes, known as turbidity currents.

(One such seismic event in 1929 offshore of Newfoundland displaced approximately 200 cubic kilometres of sediment downslope that resulted in a local tsunami and broke several transatlantic cables).

Over time these layers can accumulate to form kilometers of layered sediment that can be transformed by heat and pressure into rock.

The flysh sedimentary rocks that are so well exposed along #NovaScotia's coast formed hundreds of millions of years ago and were later deformed (folded and tilted) as a result of plate tectonic activity so many of the layers we see are inclined.

The different layers of sediments are easy to see because they are often different colours, like in the pictures below. Also, over time, the softer rock layers weather out, creating gaps in the layers and accentuating those that remain.

Some other flysch you might recognize: Dragonstone Beach in #GameofThrones! It is really Itzurun Beach in Spain and it’s known for its amazing flysch.
