Live tweet of a state budget and #COVID19 impact seminar at my school @UNG_News: #HigherEducation #highered #gapol 1/x

President in her state of university noted that not having students on campus would have serious existential impact on the school. Official is overviewing how we got here: state budget cuts, Covid impact, etc. State went from proposed 14% cuts to 11% cuts. No furloughs. 2/x

Two capital projects approved: takeover space of Lanier Tech and new business innovation center. (Capital projects are separate budget allocations than those that fund ongoing state business) 3/x

Governor last week said no state cuts planned for next FY. This comes from high July state revenues, though due to postponing federal and state deadline. But August will be key as unemployment benefits expired. 4/x

Now on our specific university budget: Original FY 21 budget had 80$ mil from tuition and $78 from state budget. $12 mil from housing. Total $258 mil. 10% cut came from that 78 mil. 5/x

Tuition rate for undergrad BA/BS degree: $2800 for full load (prob 15 hours). Fees: near $1000 for campus with athletics, $500 for one that doesn't. "Special institutional fee" of $225 is aka tuition. 6/x

So on that 10% cut: holding vacancies, ending travel, and early retirements. But: $500,000 cut from hiring part time/temp workers. And $425,000 permanent cut to that same group to pay for promotion raises for full time professors. 7/x

This last cut means while those moving up get that earned raise, less money is available to hire adjuncts, etc. Less courses offered is one effect. 8/x

Now onto the new "student housing" development that will be built on school land sold to developer. Deal not yet done for 18 acres. Closing moved to early 2021 due to pandemic. 560 beds in 140 units. 9/x

Now the question of if @BORUSG moves online: those campus-based services based on student fees would take another huge hit. Tuition stays same, but self-funding acts would likely be severely cut or ended. 10/x

Dorm fees refunded if we go online? A: CARES act replenished those Spring refunds. TBD if Fall will do same, absent any CARES act help. 11/x

Now on Corvius: UNG has contract for about 1/3 of dorm beds. Financial pressure on UNG housing decision? UNG not aware until recently of letter Corvius wrote to USG. "Student demand" is driver of dorm capacity. 12/x
