In #India, on an avg,
2700 people commit suicide every week.
~385 per day.
Or ~140,000 annually.
70% are M
30% are F
Maharashtra, TN, WB, MP, Karnataka contribute almost 50% to those deaths.
30% are illiterate or primary schooling
4%, graduates or higher.
#SuicidePrevention
This chart is from 2018 data. The listed causes of suicides in India. 140,000 people commit suicide annually - yet there is abysmal understanding and negligible focus on #Mentalhealth support systems [including rehab/support after a failed attempt].
#SuicidePreventionDay
In a lot of these cases, the #MentalHealth disruption was situational [as against clinical mental illness].So all those who get cocky and dismissive about environmental impact on mental health, develop some empathy. Biology is not the only thing. Environment/Situation matters more.
Though i do not have exact figures for #India, going by global trends, for every fatal suicide case there are between 10-25 non-fatal cases.
Assuming it to be 18, nearly 2.7 million people attempt suicide annually [or 4.4 Mn if you take Lancet report]
#SuicidePrevention
The difference [4.4 Mn against 2.7 Mn] is on account of the fact that while NCRB data points to about 140,000 annual fatalities, the Lancet Report indicates 230,000.
Either way, we are looking at a huge under-addressed, under-focused issue that impacts ~ 12 Mn
#SuicidePrevention
The fig of ~12 Million is the no. of lives impacted by people who attempt suicide [4.4 Mn]. Close family members also need support.Similar to the situation where people close to those with mental health issues are also distressed and need counselling/therapy.
