1. Third wave? There have been two consecutive weeks of increases in #Covid cases in ZA. There were 12,531 confirmed cases for the week 3-9 May (46% increase over previous week), and 17,133 cases for 10-16 May (38% increase over previous week).
2. Rt is increasing. On May 13 Rt was estimated at 1.34. On 23 April it was 1. The Rt number is an estimate of the number of people an infected person is likely to infect. The higher the number the more the #virus is spreading. coronavirus.mediahack.co.za/2020/05/25/cov…
3. The number of tests per positive case is decreasing. Based on weekly averages there was 1 positive case for every 26 tests performed for the week ending April 11. This dropped to 15 tests per positive case for the week ending 9 May, meaning more people are testing positive.
4 . Daily cases in a number of provinces are increasing. The provinces showing increases currently are #Gauteng, #NorthernCape, #FreeState and #NorthWest.
5. If we look at the #pandemic in ZA historically we can see the two previous waves of infection. We can also see a small increase to the right of the chart. Each colour in this chart represents the daily number of confirmed cases in each province.
6. Hospital admissions of Covid-19 patients have increased slightly. At the end of March admissions were around 1,600 which has increased to more than 2,200 at the start of May. Data via @nicd_sa: nicd.ac.za/wp-content/upl…
7. #SouthAfrica officially started the #vaccination rollout yesterday. To date 478,733 health workers have been vaccinated under the Sisonke trial. ZA is currently 10th in #Africa based on the number of vaccines administered.
8. Four African countries have administered over a million vaccinations each but the tiny island nation of #Seychelles has vaccinated the highest proportion of its population at 134 vaccinations per 100 people. #Morocco is next at almost 30 vaccinations per 100 people.
