Little 🧵about #climatechange
I consider myself non-politically aligned; because I want to be able to talk to everyone about issues that I think are important. I do seek allies, and I have many. But they know, I'm willing to reach out to other people.
About #climatechange I do think it is serious, but I have actually read all the literature to be able to explain why. Most just yell stuff into the void.
I am worried about the tropics. couple billion people live there. Worried about water & Crops.
#climate for those who don't know, isn't just a sunny day in December or Frost in April... You see people post stuff like, how can it be #climatechange if... and then you see a picture of snow.
#climate in its most basic definition : the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period.
And that's important "in general or over a long period"
Long period, period...
In this case, I am worried about decrease in water availability and its effects on agriculture and the livability in and of the tropics.
A large crop-failure in Russia (Wheat) was a catalyst for the Arab Spring (rising costs for food) and water shortage was a catalyst for the Syrian War.
You think a couple million refugees from those incidents were bad? Wait until systemic water shortages hit the tropics...
And that's why I do what I do. I want a better world for all. This means curbing #climatechange but also making sure everyone has access to #energy.
I did the math, I tried to envision a 100% #renewable world, because I thought that that would be an elegant solution. This was 12 years ago.
When you consider these problems on a global scale, and start considering resource production >
You realize that a prosperous world is not possible based on #renewables alone. In fact, if you want to curb the environmental damage from mining, and you want to optimize for that, you start thinking about "what else?"
And this else turned out to be #nuclear. Nuclear energy has the capability to give us a lot of energy, without damaging the earth too much, because the resource requirements are still high, but not as high as a Renewables-Only scenario.
And that's where I land. I believe we need some #renewables and some #nuclear to build a prosperous society, on earth, that doesn't tax nature too much and will leave us in a better place than we are now.
if you wonder where I am on the socio political spectrum, I will say nowhere. I see good and bad stuff on the right, the left, conservative and progressive parties.
I do not believe, I am confident, because I read literature, do math, and have a basic grasp of science.
And I will fight against stupidity as is happening in Germany (for instance). In Germany they are destroying the best run #nuclear power plants, in order to announce that they need 30 gas plants to keep a reliable grid. I will also fight anyone who thinks #renewables are enough
And I will do this despite being depressed (the clinical kind) and this means that I will be very rude from time to time, and I will not apologize for it.
