Tony Ferrante MD PhD of @ColumbiaMed providing an excellent systems based overview of the "metabolic" complications of #obesity and potential mechanisms: lipotoxicity, inflammation, adipokines
Some highlights:
1/
Neurology:
Check out this relationship where higher BMI is associated with ↑ risk of #dementia EXCEPT in age >70 when it's better to be in "overweight" category
👉Aiming for a "normal BMI" is not the best goal for everyone

And #NAFLD

4/
Remember that these are correlations so relationships can go both ways. I'm always suspicious about pro-inflammatory states stimulating anabolism that predisposes people to #obesity
5/
I'm often asked about anti #obesity #medications and #cancer, a worthwhile safety concern. We have some data for GLP1s and a subtype of #thyroid cancer (in rats) but also good to remember that #obesity ↑risk of many cancers and #weightloss likely ↓ this risk
