I'm really concerned that Ant Man & The Wasp failed to capture the diversity of the White experience.
To be clear: Hollywood needs to have more stories to reflect our diverse experiences. #CrazyRichAsians stays ON THEME. 🤷🏻‍♀️
I personally have not and will NEVER say #CrazyRichAsians is "progressive." That's why when folks were saying it was "our Black Panther" I got fired up.
Hollywood is SO behind SO fucking behind, a Mostly Light-Skinned, extra Chinesey, wealth fantasy about the 1% of Asia is considered GROUND-BREAKING. So in that context it is. But we have SUCH a long way to go it is truly the work of our lifetimes. #CrazyRichAsians
We can love, support AND criticize something at the same time.

#CrazyRichAsians is ground-breaking for representation in Hollywood. FACT.

"Asians" does not mean ALL Asians. FACT.

The movie does not cover the often oppressed brown & non-Chinese people of Singapore. FACT.

1/ In a hypercompetitive, hyper-saturated content marketplace, the retreat to/reliance upon “IP” is sensible and likely to persist.

But it also strongly disadvantages diverse stories. To most studios, IP usually means popular, western classics

This has a few consequences
2/ For example, “minorities” tend to be minor characters or non-existent in these “classics”. See 'Lord of the Rings', 'Game of Thrones', 'Harry Potter', 'Narnia', 'Oz', etc.
3/ And where those secondary characters exist, such as 'Black Panther' (from ‘Fantastic Four’), they were typically created by white men, (originally) lacked authentic sensibilities, were prone to latent (or overt) racism, and rarely emphasized - even if they had their own series

Scott is adorable but does nothing. His goal is to be at home when the FBI gets there so he can get off of house arrest. (2/13)
Hope and Hank are actively seeking a goal - rescuing Janet - but they don't make any moral choices (i.e., good vs. good or bad vs. bad - good vs. bad is not a choice) throughout the movie. They're flat characters, just plain ol' good guys. (3/13)

My post digging on that Mary Sue article complaining about people with disabilities in Marvel movies has kind of exploded.

The most heart warming part is all the people who have shared their own stories of chronic pain and how much Ghost meant to them in Ant Man & the Wasp.
Really, up to this point I was pretty sure I wasn't the only one who felt this way, but I never really knew. I don't know other chronic pain sufferers in my life who are also comic geeks.

It warms my heart to know y'all are out there too.
Also, that Mary Sue article has 150 likes and my post calling bullshit on it has over 10,000.

It's nice to know that people by and large get it.
