Great to see the biggest % increase in non-compulsory #GCSE subject entires this yr was in Biology, Chemistry & Physics (as part of double award)

@thetimes: "160,110 pupils in England took chemistry [in 2018] compared w 53,309 in 2008”

Go #stem #scicomm #edu! #gcseresults2018
However, looking ahead to uni, only “46% of [STEM] graduates pursued careers in science, with the rest preferring management, banking or teaching” - says research by Leicester & Warwick unis, quoted in @thetimes thetimes.co.uk/article/boom-i…

⬇️
Which are great careers - esp teaching - but @Telegraph reports @NAOorguk as saying “there are particular shortages of STEM skills at technician level, but an oversupply in other areas, such as biological science graduates,” telegraph.co.uk/politics/2018/…

⬇️
So, more GCSE students taking double science 🙌 but less #university #stem graduates going into #stem careers 😞

Shall shalt be done? 🤔

I also need to add the GCSE ➡️ ALevel ➡️ Uni steps. Can anyone do that for me? (I’ve got a script I need to write!)

Gloriously nerdy tech day!! I'm upgrading the spare room studio to incl live talk back with a producer in a remote studio + more for #BigBangDigital next week. I'm hosting & the live guests + stories of #stem efforts during the pandemic are inspiring! digitalbigbang.co.uk
Oooooo (also: yum! Nice touch @FIX8Group, thanks!)

This is obvs not new tech btw, this has been sent for the event next week & will then return 😔

However I have been upgrading our kit & working out how to do #letsgolive on location with no power or WiFi - will share that soon! ImageImage
First thing first, internet. Hard-wiring so there's no risk of WiFi dropping out.

CAT 5 cable from router, up the stairs to a switcher in the spare room studio

That's a wrap on my #cheltscifestathome!

I hosted 6 daily conversations exploring how to transform our world 🌍 (each on a different @unitednations Sustainable Development Goal) plus the @FameLab UK Final LIVE from 'the spare room studio'

(continued 👇) Image
The @FameLab UK Final was ambitious: finalists' presentations were pre-recorded but I suggested we do the event live so we could incorporate live comments & reveal winner live on Skype! I was handling the stream, tech, 15 VTs and doing links live from the spare room studio! 😅
The SDG conversations were pre-recorded with each guest recording locally on phones. I had two cameras set-up in studio - one for Zoom plus a wide.

They were such interesting conversations. Big thanks to all my guests, @UKRI_News for the support and the @CheltSciFest team

Thanks Ed!

Here's what happened - a mini thread for tech / live stream nerds:

Our software updated an hour before live & the new version didn't take the feeds from our DSLR (main cam)

Cue lots of troubleshooting of cables, USB ports, etc

1/n
Realised old laptop had previous version of software, checked DLSR input, and bingo. So, reloaded all show assets (LOTS of videos, pics and sfx) and quickly realised it wouldn't handle the Infrared Camera + Aquascope WebCam + DLSR + laptop cam + assets 🤦‍♂️

2/n
Realised I could use old iPhone as wide shot (old because I now use a Samsung and software only works with Apple phones) so switched back to original higher spec laptop

BOOM now we're GO for live.

And then while live two unexpected things happened...

We've had ONE MILLION plays of #letsgolive! 🤯

SO proud our daily science show is helping with lockdown homeschooling. @maddiemoate & I are blown away by the 300+ daily emails of kids' creations! 😊 Thank you!

Catch up on 28 X 30min shows over 6 themes: letsgolive.show Image
Also, we realised that's one million PLAYS not views because often you lot watch together, as a family, or as a school, so VIEWS would actually be even more! 😮
Huge thanks to all of you who watch the show and to our small #letsgolive team of brilliant part-time freelancers: shout-out to @robjyeo's graphics, @Kalyanilodhia's production support, @KayleighKeam ideas + words, & Ed's edits. THANKS TEAM! 🙌

I had the most disgusting train journey ever today...

...it involved fingernails

NOT mine

I feel VERY sick 🤢

and I need to know if you think this is ok behaviour? 🤔

⬇️ (gross) thread 1/n

[fans of #shaggedmarriedannoyed with @Rosemarino & @IAmChrisRamsey will appreciate] Image

WATCH THIS.

[and if you can make it to the end without barfing a bit your stomach is better than mine]

IS THIS OK TO DO ON THE TRAIN??!

It’s ok I’ll answer that for you: NO

And you can guess where this is going next....

This lasted for ONE HOUR.

(It wasn’t just nail cutting, it was cleaning them out too 🤢)

I can’t get out. She’s trapped me. Her & her nail clippings. They’ll fall on me. They’ll fall on the table.

I stay put for an hour of hell.

Then we approach final stop... Image

What a night! 😮 The ‘12 Demos Of Xmas’ was crazily ambitious, *slightly* longer than 12 mins (sorry @robinince & @ProfBrianCox 😬), but so much fun & so much mess!

Thank you for the lovely tweets re it and kind words IRL after gig.

#Compendium #science #scicomm #stem ImageImageImageImage
Huge thanks to two amazing guys without whom that couldn’t have happened: @MatthewTosh - Pyrotechnician and H&S pro - and Chemist extraordinaire @StockburnChem from @UCLan 🙏
Thanks also to my sidekick in life @maddiemoate for helping out (#DoYouKnow she’s amazing at making giant crackers?!) & to @beardyman + @FOTSN for joining on stage & being great humans. Btw Beardyman is epic live!! And ofc thank you @ProfBrianCox & @robinince - amazing night
