I’ve now had three people bring this idea—that the guy Whelan accused was a willing participant in Whelan’s fiasco—into my mentions. Come on. No.
The guy is a middle-school teacher. He’s coach of his school’s debate team. Someone whose career is mentoring 13-year-olds doesn’t volunteer to be falsely identified as a rapist.
And not just “falsely identified as a rapist.” Falsely identified as part of a huge national news story that’s already sent one innocent person into hiding in fear for her life.
I could do another eight tweets on why this makes no sense, but no. Come on. It’s ridiculous.

A weird tack for a guy whose whole pitch is his elder-statesman avuncularity to take. "I don't want to run, but all the kids in the race are crap, so here I am" is the opposite of the tone I'd have expected him to set.
Just a reminder that his instincts for primary-race messaging have never been any good, I guess.
"We have a great, deep field, and I'm honored to be running alongside this crew. Whichever of us wins the nomination would be a far better president than Trump, and if it's not me, I'll be working night and day to be sure they get to prove it" is Biden's natural lane right now.

One more thing on youth voting: There are a lot of folks in my mentions saying kids aren’t cognitively developed enough to vote. But it’s not clear to me what that means.
At 12, the typical kid is more than able to meet baseline standards for voting—understanding what an election is, learning about candidates, managing the act of voting.
When we bar kids from making choices they’re not mature enough to make, it’s generally because we’re worried that they’ll do harm to themselves or others if allowed to choose.

Just saw something on my feed that reminded me to remind you that if you’re a NYC (or vicinity) high school or middle school teacher and you’d like me to come talk to your students, all you have to do is say so and I’ll be there.
I've spoken with NYC middle school students about the history of youth activism, how they can make change themselves, whether we should lower the voting age—all sorts of stuff. And the conversations are always really lively.
And because it's so much fun, and because it's a subway ride away, and because I know that y'all don't have budgets for this stuff, I'm happy to do it for free. So shoot me a message if you want to set it up.

So now that we have about 20 areas of Kavanaugh’s misleading statements and failures of credibility as an adult (long thread w/ links below), I hope the Senators focus on the most relevant set for questions today:
1. Did you have any contact with Ed Whelan from Sept 14-18?
2. Did you have any contact with Leonard Leo from Sept. 14-18? (Of course he did. Kavanaugh was in the White House much of 9/17-18)
3. Given that you suggested a case of mistaken identity, did you suggest any suspects to Leo, McGahn, or anyone?
4. Did you mention the name of your former high school friend, now a middle school teacher?
(If Kavanaugh helped Leo/Whelan defame and smear his high school friend, it may reflect lack of credibility, and it'd be disqualifyingly monstrous. How else did Whelan get such details?)

I was going to try to put together a list of all of the falsehoods, implausible claims, and questionable conduct by Kavanaugh solely as an ADULT.

And @OrrinHatch staff coordinated with Ed Whelan to find another way to discredit Dr. Blasey Ford. It wasn't their first attempt.
They had to figure out a way to discredit her without saying she was a liar and repeating the whole Anita Hill debacle.

So the first defense was the "recovered memories are faulty". They sent Linda Chavez out to @chrislhayes show to float it. Ed Whelan tweeted it (now deleted)
But that didn't work with the facts known (Blasey Ford shared it with a therapist in 2012, told her husband in 2006). And it was largely being laughed at by the media as speculation.

People drown because they panic, not because they can’t swim. The Whelan email is symptomatic of the utter panic consuming a nomination that hangs by the thinnest of threads and the looming spectacle of out of touch octogenarians like Orin Hatch interrogating Dr. Ford.
When I ran the Roberts and Alito confirmations Ed Whalen was the singularly most important and effective outside advisor involved in the confirmation effort. He knew every detail when it came to our strategy and everything he did was closely coordinated with the WH effort.
He is a brilliant, meticulous and serious lawyer. He is not a conspiracy nut. It is inconceivable to me that Whelan published that email without discussions, debate and assistance from the WH and GOP Senators and staff. It is not the isolated musings of one man but rather part
