I am aware of several incidents. In one orphanage, the superintendent herself told local Muslims to shift Muslims girls to another orphanage (take them from here). It was exception and the city had a Muslim orphanage, which is not very common, else it was not possible.
It is the job of social workers and justice officials to ensure that children of different religions get the basic initiation into their faith and they don't feel lonely or isolated. It is their right. But this doesn't happen. Society indifferent. Only in few cities, committees..
It is not that people aren't humane. There are numerous stories, incidents when Hindu or Muslim families raise kid of other faith, ensured that the child remained on his/her religion and later even married off as per their desire. Unfortunately, state authorities most insensitive
As far as Muslim society is concerned, it is not as poor as it appears. They're well off but little focus on widows, orphans and their welfare despite Islam's stress on it. It is not tough to take care of 10-20-50 or even hundred orphans at district or city level.
There are individuals who have done it single-handedly, then why can't entire community (lakhs in each district) do it? The zakat funds are spent carelessly. On the other hand, Qazi-led delegations are rare--neither in Anathalayas (children), nor Nari Niketan (teenaged girls).
For any society that doesn't care about orphans & widows or those abandoned for years & years, there is nothing much can be said. If we don't care about them & only get angry when they are married off in 'other religion', (even if authorities' fault)....
