I’m at Taft Charter High School for a town hall on the #WoolseyFire. Sen. Henry Stearn, who represents the state’s 27th district, started the town hall with a moment of silence for the victims of the Borderline shooting, local and Northern California fires.
Cal Fire Chief of Strategic Planning Thom Porter said “I am so sorry for all of your losses, so sorry for how this all began with the tragic killing of young people trying to have a good time and the (sergeant).”
Porter said resources are spread between the Camp Fire in Paradise, CA, and the local fires here. But out of state help is on the way, he said, “there are over 200 (engines) in route from as far away as Texas.”
LA County Fire Chief David Richardson said that in his 30-plus years in firefighting, “This is by far the quickest and fastest moving fire I have witnessed and been a part of.”
EVACUATION UPDATE: The entire city of Calabasas is now under mandatory evacuation, said State Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel. #WoolseyFire
CHP says PCH closures will remain in effect for “quite some time” until stability takes place. With the 101 freeway, the “tentative” plan is to reopen the main artery of the 101 tonight but to keep the off-ramps closed from Reyes Adobe to Valley Circle.
LA County Sheriff Chief John Benedict asked evacuees of Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Westlake Village, Malibu and nearby evacuation areas not to return to their homes yet. “They are not yet rendered safe,” he said, adding that many of the areas are still disastrous.
On the two people found burned and dead in their car Friday in the Malibu area, Benedict said the homicide bureau is still investigating but an early assessment is they believe the driver may have become disorientated while trying to evacuate and then was overcome by the fire
Malibu City Councilman Skylar Peak estimates at least 100 homes are destroyed in the city. “It looks like armageddon,” Peak said. Councilman Jefferson Wagner is in the hospital for smoke inhalation but is expected to be OK and Mayor Rick Mullen is still firefighting, he says
Some of the attendees are getting upset, saying they are tired of hearing about the status of celebrities’ homes but not their own
Attendees are upset/concerned on the 3,000-plus students at Pepperdine who are staying in place. “We cannot sacrifice the rest of Malibu for Pepperdine,” said Sen. Henry Stearns of district 27.
Congresswoman-elect Katie Hill said she will do everything possible to bring resources here “regardless of Donald Trump’s Tweets,” referencing earlier Tweets by the president that threatened to take away federal funding for the state’s firefighting
LA County Fire Chief David Richardson said a rough, early estimate for when folks in the Agoura Hills area might be able to go back is 3-5 days. Again, emphasis on EARLY estimate
A Calabasas man asked Sen. Henry Stearns why they cannot return to their homes even though there is not a fire there yet. “They’re (fire officials) taking an abundance of precautions to protect your lives,” Stearns said, referencing fatalities in Malibu and Paradise.
A Pepperdine student said she’s not necessarily defending the school’s decision to stay in place, but said many of the students were still in mourning and in shock over the death of the student who died in the Borderline shooting when the fire came toward the campus
And here’s the final story on tonight’s Town Hall in Woodland Hills on the #WoolseyFire
