Judge Alsup asks of PG&E lawyer why it paid $4.5B to company owners in recent years when that money could have been used to trim trees.

"Why is it PG&E always say safety is our number one thing ... it's not really true," he says.
Judge Alsup and one of the PG&E lawyers are now getting into a testy exchange about how CA utilities and regulators apply the state's vegetation management laws. The judge thinks the law is really stricter than how PG&E and the CPUC implement it re power lines
PG&E lawyer says it doesn't matter because the company wants to dramatically beef up its vegetation management around power lines. But it will take 8 years, mostly because of a lack of qualified tree trimmers, he says

As @RevYearwood so eloquently put it, climate change is about "HUMANITY," about justice. It's also an issue of our national security, health, safety, economy. Climate change is changing & will change everything. It's effecting everything we care about. 2/x

#California’s deadliest wildfire devastated #Paradise High School’s Class of 2019: Their town destroyed, post-graduation plans in chaos. I went to #Chico, a city turned makeshift #campfire refugee camp, to see how the #seniors are handling the trauma.…
Their school is now temporarily operating in a shopping mall storefront, wedged between a JCPenney and a toy store. A “#Paradise Strong” banner hangs on one wall, near donated backpacks filled with new school supplies intended for students who lost theirs in the fire.
I met Kaleb Nelson, a #Paradise varsity football player who fled the fire barefoot, fire on both sides of the road. He forgot to save his dad’s wedding ring. Now he’s living in an old R.V. with his girlfriend, Adrianna Orozco. “All we have is each other,” he told me.

We’ve spent this week reporting on the aftermath of the deadly #CampFire in Northern California for @newshour. Here’s a thread on what we’ve been seeing.
Three weeks in, there’s obvious relief that #CampFire is 100% contained, but thousands of people from #Paradise are still homeless, with no obvious remedy. Almost 90 people died in the fire, and nearly 190 more are still unaccounted for.
The scene up in #Paradise itself is just shocking. Photos just don’t do it justice. There’s a lot of talk about the “restorative” power of fire, but what we’ve seen was *anything* but....

1/ The smoke from this month’s devastating #CampFire has lifted from many parts of California.

Yet our new analysis of hospital data suggests health problems could just be starting.…
2/ We analyzed hospital data from last year’s Tubbs fire, California’s second most destructive blaze.

We found that 3 to 5 months after the flames died out, regional emergency rooms saw a 20 percent spike in patients with heart and lung problems.
3/ In January through March 2018, 7 of 9 hospitals in Sonoma and Napa counties – areas close to the heart of the blaze – saw upticks in patients admitted for heart and respiratory ailments compared to the same months in 2017 and 2016.

@Ocasio2018 We keep reading about how the extreme weather of 2017 is the "new normal" thanks to global warming — even if the weather in question is frigid air. But the data don't show any trend in extreme weather events in the U.S. for decades. Science, anyone?…
@Ocasio2018 A year ago, thousands of scientists issued a terrifying "second notice" to mankind about how we will destroy the planet unless we take "urgent" action.
If this warning is as reliable as the first notice they issued in 1992, we have nothing to worry about.…
@Ocasio2018 In the U.S. at least, air pollution is down since 1992 for every single pollutant the EPA measures. And our CO2 emissions are down since the mid-1990s, yet #ClimateCatastrophists claim NONE of that improvement has slowed global, or U.S. #ClimateChange.…

It's the night before thanksgiving. It's cold and wet outside. #CampFire evacuees are still bracing the elements and looking for shelter. Here are some images I'd like to share some images from my time exploring the Chico Walmart parking lot, a temporary refuge for some.
Folks like Sarah, Martin and James, from Magalia, have made the most out of their circumstance. A parking spot was their living room. They set up a propane heater (which was stolen in the middle of the night later) and a television to watch the latest news on the #CampFire.
Brenda Wilson tried very hard to keep her dog Scooby warm. The dog was shivering. She slept in the car. She was cold herself. She was distraught and wanted to go home. When I spoke to her, she had no idea if her home survived the #CampFire.

Magalia had a plan to remove the dead trees but it had to be approved by California environmental agencies. By law only 50 acres a YEAR could be treated with prescribed burning up to 500 acres over 10 years. WTF is wrong with you @JerryBrownGov
What did these plans have to address? AIR QUALITY of course, notice how wildfires affect moonbeams precious air😡 This didn’t have to happen. #CampFire
It didn’t stop there. FROGS needed to be studied 🐸and of course a detailed study of every plant that ever lived. All of them dead now. #CampFire

Also just a reminder that whatever other precautions you’re taking change, or get landlord to change, the filters on your HVAC.
Folks who are still in market for air filter: we got this Conway brand via @wirecutter last year during Napa fires and it is a godsend. But think I’ll get another :(

The #CampFire deserves more of our attention. The loss of life is astounding, as is the heroism. But unlike hurricanes and floods, there seems to be collective shoulder shrug about what can be least here on the East Coast.
Our structures are outdated. Wild lands firefighters are geared to be seasonal. Now they are year round. And DC folk, did you know that most people WHO JUMP INTO A FIRE are GS-5s and GS-7s?
And rebuilding? No such thing as "build back better" in Paradise. It will take a year or more for the land to be cleared. These survivors must start from scratch. Do we have resources in place to adequately help them with that process? Of course not.

Millions of people will attend church today, but if you’re like me and not religious (yet an empath) non-denominational prayer is effective. 76 people have lost their lives. Each life will leave 100s of broken hearts behind. Through collective prayer we can send love and light...
And although that is not enough for the impacted lives that remain with us on earth, it still helps to nourish the spirit that connects us all. Will you join me in prayer this Sunday. For one day, we will be the ones who need to be prayed for. No one is guaranteed protection from
the calamity caused by climate change and the grief it leaves behind. #Campfire #Sunday #GreenNewDeal

THREAD: how to help wildfire efforts. Because of my background, I’ve been asked for my recommendations of best orgs to help with #wildfire relief. #CaliforniaFires #CampFireSmoke #ButteCountyFire #CalFire #firefighters
2- my focus was NorCal because this is the vastly more disastrous area. And there are obvious choices like the Red Cross. That said, I was most impressed by two organizations that I believe are worthy of your support and will immediately put to use.
3- the first org is @NVCF they only use 1% to admin fees and are in Chico. They are on the ground helping and they also provide support for animals.

There are between 600-1000 people missing in the Camp Fire.
It's been 8 days.
Let that sink in.
If 1000 people were missing and presumed dead on the East Coast there'd be wall-to-wall coverage.
We can hope that some people may just not have connected with authorities and their families. But it's been eight days. Eight.

THREAD: I've seen a lot of "How to Help" posts & I am so grateful for the people who want to help. Having been evacuated from my home for 18 days during the #CarrFire and now living in a community recovering from a natural disaster, I have a few additions. 1/
There are agencies in Butte County doing the best they can but simply don't have the resources to serve the populations that have been displaced. For example, schools are closed until Dec 2. The County library system sure could use an infusion of cash.… 2/
Libraries will be places of refuge from the smoke but they will also be where people can make copies, access the internet, pick up forms, read books to their kids. 3/

Even by the disaster standard of California, this map is staggering. To see a whole city wiped out, with each destroyed building noted, offers something all those horrible photos cannot. Disturbing @priyakkumar @gaufre visualization…

...And it happened right away. Paradise was gone in hours. The #CampFire kept spreading over the next week, but the real damage was done immediately.

Let's talk about #CampFire for a second. My family moved to Paradise in 1991, as I was starting 8th grade. I lived there through high school, until heading to college. The family stayed until all kids had graduated high school - the last in 2004.

This was us at home in '91.
While news has referred to Paradise as isolated, we actually were moving from an even smaller town. I'd spent elementary school in Brownsville in Yuba County. When my dad got a new medical practice in Paradise, we were blown away by the McDonalds and "all those power lines".
I only spent one year in the Paradise school district, before my mom got a job teaching at Chico Jr. High. Through high school, I spent every early morning at church in seminary, and then driving down the Skyway to Pleasant Valley High School. (Here's us in front of our house)
