Tyler Barriss, the instigator of the swatting that led to the death of Andrew Finch, is scheduled to plead guilty to an array of federal charges today. (1/x) kansas.com/news/nation-wo…
Though he will appear in federal court in Wichita, where Finch was killed, Barriss will be pleading guilty to charges from the Central District of California and the District of Columbia, too. The California case is the most sprawling. wired.com/story/feds-hit…
Given the severity of sentences in the federal system, there's a chance the state of Kansas will drop its involuntary manslaughter case against Barriss--a first-of-its-kind case that is by no means a legal slam dunk (since Barriss was 1,400 miles away when Finch was killed.)
The Finch family's civil-rights lawsuit against the city of Wichita, meanwhile, is barreling toward trial. The police officers who witnessed Officer Justin Rapp shoot the unarmed Andy Finch from 40 yards away have been deposed. Something to keep an eye on for 2019.
Lastly, a reminder that Barriss spent months openly boasting about his exploits on this here website. People alerted law enforcement in multiple jurisdictions. Nothing was done.
