In April 1926 Agatha Christie’s mother died. Christie was very close to her: she had been home-schooled and believed her mother was clairvoyant. The shock of her sudden death hit the author hard.

Today is the punyathithi of C.V.Raman, one of the greatest Indian scientists of the modern era. The first Indian to win a Nobel in Science, and the only Indian citizen too. A genius who was more than a mere scientist, a brilliant thinker and one of the greats of modern India.
Chandrashekhar Venkata Raman, or C.V.Raman was also the first Asian to get the Nobel Prize in Science, for his Raman Effect, which experimentally demonstrated that the light-quanta and molecules do exchange energy which manifests itself as a change in the colour.
And it was not just physics, he published around 475 papers on topics ranging from astronomy to metereology to physiology. Raman's work on the mridangam, bought to light the accoustical knowledge possesed in ancient India.

Happy #EngineersDay celebrated in honor of Shri Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, whose Jayanti it is today. And Google Doodle today in his honor. One of the builders of modern India, an engineering genius, and one of the greatest Indians of modern era.
Mokshagundam Visweswarayya, founder of the modern Mysore State. Every where you go in that region, you can find his legacy, be it the mighty Krishna Raja Sagar Dam or institutions like State Bank of Mysore or the Bhadravati Steel Factory.
Vishwesarayya was born in Mudenahalli, now located in Chikballapur district on Sept 15,1861 to Srinivasa Sastry and Venkachamma. His father was a well known Sanskrit scholar, from whom he learnt to respect the culture and traditions of Bharat.

The oldest structure on CIA grounds is a 4 story Georgian Revival house built in 1926.

It was occupied by Margaret Scattergood & Florence Thorne for 53 years. Neither could have predicted who would become their neighbors.

1926: Margaret moved to DC to work for the American Federation of Labor (AFL) where she met Florence. They both worked @ AFL until they retired & are credited w significant contributions to labor movement, including advancing women’s rights in the workplace & child labor laws.
Margaret & Florence purchased the house & 20 acres of land in 1933. They dubbed it, “the Calvert Estate,” in tribute to Florence’s distinguished lineage – her mother was a direct descendant of Sir George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore of Maryland.

This is a THREAD on vocalist #JonHendricks, who passed away at the age of 96 yesterday. Although a name not as recognizable as Ella or Torme, many folks age 40 or over may have long ago had a brush with one of his master works.
So...what was so revolutionary about #jonhendricks's contributions to Music ? There were already established 'scat' singers in Jazz at the time.
#johhendricks, RIP, was a Pioneer of Vocalese. Along with Eddie Jefferson, Jon was the first artist/arranger to actually write lyrics to instrumental parts of pop and jazz tunes of the day.
