a cool thing about the world is that people get way more mad about trans kids taking puberty blockers, which are totally reversible and which they can go off of at any time, than effexor, which doctors can give you after talking to you for 10 minutes and which is hell to get off
there are entire schools of antidepressants that should not be given to people until every other thing has been tried because you cannot tell if they are working until the person taking them has been on them long enough that it's very hard to get off
it takes an ENORMOUS amount of time and energy to get any kind of transgender healthcare that is difficult to reverse, but there are lots of healthcare treatments that doctors will throw at people who do not have all the information and that can be incredibly harmful

this just completely fails to acknowledge the chilling effect that this shit has on speech
the internet as a platform for free speech and creativity is literally being stifled because using it to speak freely or produce creative works regularly results in people deciding to use all these poorly moderated platforms to harass and threaten you

The @nytimes just published an anonymous op-ed from a "senior administration official." I'd like to posit a guess as to who wrote it. Getting my @ashleyfeinberg on began with a single word that jumped out at me...
The word is "LODESTAR." Note that it comes in the same paragraph praising John McCain. That would rule out flame-throwers like Stephen Miller and Dan Scavino and suggest someone with Senate ties. This reveal is not going to take long.
"Lodestar" just seems like an unusual word to use in general, not to mention in an op-ed that's going to be widely read. It has this whiff of sanctimony. So I search for John Kelly and James Mattis ever having used the word "lodestar." Nothing. But then...

Just blocked a whole slate of professional TERFs, assorted transphobes, and miscellaneous transmisiast miscreants. They are so boring, with their droning on about things they don't understand, especially the ones with PhDs. A doctorate is not proof against ignorance and fallacy.
The worst part of it is their egos are terribly inflated by the media platforms they've gained *precisely* because they attack people's humanity. Nothing sells like controversy, not even sex, but they take popularity as evidence of their superiority and bludgeon others with it.
What is truly disturbing is how many people who are ostensibly socially progressive and have large media platforms are insistently attacking trans women, such as Graham Linehan in the UK, Jesse Singal in the US, Chimamanda Adichie in Nigeria, and others more notorious globally.

The problem is not that Jesse Singal is a cis reporter writing about trans issues.

It's that all the trans people who talk to him for any length of time come away disgusted and upset, and cis people don't think that's a problem.
Jesse Singal writes about trans people like he's fairly, generously, evenhandedly covering "both sides" of the issue: people who think that trans folk should be granted the basic dignity of self-defined identity, and those who think we're a sickness to be suppressed and repaired.
It's a false equivalence he likes to push, as if the pro- and anti- dignity arguments could ever amount to anything but polite hate speech.

Now, as people have pointed out, there is a legal aspect to the freedoms granted, such as the fact it only serves to protect us against government limitation of our speech, and a social aspect, i.e. whether it is such a basic liberty we should seek to uphold it privately. /2

I've been going to cons as a vendor or attendee for 20+ years. Cons have changed a lot, but the biggest change is NOT what most people always point out... that media has taken over the Con. That's true, but the big change is in the people who go, and why they are there. 2/18
Con attendees are not the day-in, day-out comic buyer. Con attendees are by and large more casual fans of the actual books, even though the cosplay may trick you into thinking they are "super fans". They are "super-fans", but of the idea of comics far more than the titles. 3/18
