A quick THREAD on the contradictions of the home office and @sajidjavid over the stripping of #ShamimaBegum's British citizenship.
It's a MUST READ to see just how @theresa_may's old department's #hostileenvironment appears to discriminate against BAME people... 1/n

So currently there are international laws which state that when a citizen commits a crime in a foreign country, that country has the right to deport the person to their home country. This is accepted, and not a contentious issue. 2/15

In fact, the British gov't loves using these powers.
It regularly deports British residents of Caribbean descent. People who moved to Britain as toddlers and have British kids have been taken away from their families and sent 'back' to the Caribbean. 3/15

This has frequently resulted in both young and old British-Caribbean residents being sent to live in countries they have been not to since birth.
This is not an exaggeration, people have and are still being sent to countries they don't know... 4/15

E.g. The exposé of the Windrush Scandal revealed that the @ukhomeoffice had published pamphlets instructing those deported to Jamaica to try and fit in by "learning a Jamaican accent." edition.cnn.com/2018/04/17/eur… 5/15

So why is the #Windrushscandal relevant to the case of #ShamimaBegum?
Well it shows that when its dealing with BAME people, the home office seems to have two contradictory policies... 6/15

If you're a BAME Briton and commit a crime in GB, the HO will try to deport you to your 'home country'
But if you're a BAME Briton and commit a crime abroad, the HO will refuse to recieve you back in your home country - the UK. 7/15

So why is this contradiction so bad?
Well the HO's inconsistent stances have made it think it is allowed to ignore the rights of BAME Britons.
E.g. If you're BAME and commit a crime in the UK, even if its petty theft, the HO will view you as guilty until proven innocent... 8/15

Here's Minister @JBrokenshire boasting about how the government was now deporting those convicted of a crime before their appeals had been heard.

.#ShemimaBegum's case is therefore annother demonstration of how the HO thinks it can just abandon and ignore the human + legal rights of #BAME Britons.
Shemima Begum has committed a serious crime, but that doesn't mean that she has no human rights for the HO to respect. 10/15

Making #ShemimaBegum stateless, by stripping her British citizenship, would represent a breaking of her human right to have a nationality. (Today it emerged that she is not a Bangladeshi citizen as the press had suggested was the case.) theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/f… 11/15

.@sajidjavid must therefore go back on his pledge to block her return and allow her entry to the UK where she can be dealt with by the British police and justice systems.
To do otherwise, would see the HO once again disrespect the basic legal rights of another BAME Briton. 12/15

And you know what Mr. Javid and Mrs. May?
Us ordinary BAME people are angry at and WONT TOLERATE Tory politicians disregarding our human rights, just so that they can please the Daily Mail and boost their leadership prospects, ANYMORE. 13/15

At the @LibDems and @LDCRE1 we #Demandbetter than the mistreatment of BAME people by the @ukhomeoffice..
That's why we demand an end to the #HostileEnvironment which presumes BAME people are guilty, until proven otherwise. 14/15

And on #ShemimaBegum that's why we urge @sajidjavid to follow the law and respect her human rights, by returning her to Britain so that she can be tried for her acts in the British courts and not the British tabloids. THREAD ENDS. #nohostileenvironment #modernpartymodernbritain
