1/ Because I live in an echo bubble of early-adopters, VCs and fast-moving startups, I think I've underestimated (a) HOW slowly large companies move and (b) HOW long it takes to displace them.

Two examples from Google and Microsoft:

2/ ... Google Sheets, but boy are they slow at improving the products (remember that Google acquired Writely back in 2006 and turned it into G-Docs). With hindsight, there was a whole decade that offered a great opportunity for a startup to build a better version of G-Docs and...
3/ ... G-Sheets. It looks like @airtable and @notion are doing it now, so it’s not too late.

- Microsoft lost search, social networking, MP3, mobile phones, mobile OS and a bunch of other big markets. And FWIW, I don’t know any founders or VCs who use a Windows PC (except ...
4/ ... for @stefansmalla :) ). And yet, Microsoft is again/still the most valuable company on the planet.

Takeaway: The behemoths have incredible staying power in spite of being slow, but the market has become so huge that startups can build plenty of billion-dollar ...
5/ ... companies in areas owned by MSFT, GOOG, APPL or AMZN without causing any concerns for the big guys (all of which are approaching 1000 billion in market cap).
6/ In B2B SaaS, Salesforce is $100B+ and Workday is close to $50B. Think about how large you can get in their spaces before they even notice.

Someone should set up a scorecard for various companies to fill in how long it takes them to get name changes processed, for trans people and the like (some people just change their name BECAUSE).
and including what processes they made you go through.
like can you go on their site and just click the "EDIT" button on the name field and 20 seconds later, you're done?
Do you have to call them? go in-store? both? do you have to send them certified mail? does it take a long time?
will they refuse to sell you a phone until you can show up with a valid ID in your old name despite having changed your name on their site 6 years ago?
NOT THAT I'M MENTIONING ANY SPECIFIC PHONE COMPANIES HERE...

They are not literally sending 40+ full quality images per second

E.g., w/a person talking, their head might be almost completely still while their lips move

A codec might essentially “freeze” the head (omitting most detail for a few frames)

What we don't realize in Africa is that this whole global tech startup thing is not very different from a Ponzi scheme. We need very big companies to acquire smaller companies as the exits keep the ecosystems alive. People will keep producing as long as there are buyers.
You ask yourself why VCs pump up companies with very large valuations. I don't think it is just because of the outsize exits at IPO. It is the other exits they enable through M&A. I am sure that VCs have made more money from FAANG acquisitions than IPO.
Africa needs very large companies that can also acquire others to keep the wheels running. If everyone could do an IPO easily, there would be no need for you to find local market fit and rapid growth. We will all be sellers and there will be no buyers.

I had to report for jury duty this morning. I'll be sitting here for a while. So I might as well talk about what's been going on with me. This may be somewhat meandering. So apologies in advance.
The important thing to put out there is that I no longer work at Lever. I was Director of Product Engineering at Lever for almost a year and a half. I resigned before Christmas and my last day was Jan 4.
I haven't decided what I'm doing next. But I have made a pretty important decision. I'm probably going to take a step back from engineering management for a while. I need a break.

I promised @ag_conservative that I would explain why I think an FBI investigation is a good idea that is our best chance of getting at the truth -- and therefore why I disagree with him. Here's a thread.
To narrow this a bit, I'm going to address this to those on the right who agree with @AG_Conservative that an investigation can't be helpful. This a fast-moving story and I don't claim to have special insights, but here's why, from my perspective, that seems wrong.
Yesterday two witnesses gave dramatically different testimony. There is a basis on which to find each witness credible. As Trump said, Dr. Ford was a "very credible witness" who gave "compelling" testimony. And J. Kavanaugh is one of our most distinguished and respected judges.
