ES&S claims that it has found religion on election security calling for paper ballots, more rigorous testing and no connections to the internet but their statements ring hollow in light of their record. Let’s take a look - cnet.com/news/paper-bal…
ES&S claims there should be more rigorous testing of voting machines, but ES&S continues to certify its voting systems to the more lax and outdated standards rather than newer standards. ES&S also boasts that it participates in testing at the National labs but that program was ..
...instituted last year and ES&S demurred for months while other vendors engaged. ES&S also failed to participate the CA SOS Top to Bottom review and has attacked security testing at DEF CON. @VotingVillageDC
ES&S, with other vendors hired lobbyists to oppose the DMCA, which allows security research of voting systems. Not too research friendly. ES&S also claims there should be no internet connectivity of voting systems, yet ES&S actively markets wireless modems...
...in their systems. Additionally ES&S finally admitted it sold their systems with remote access software in them, which allow remote access over the internet-a huge security risk. ES&S admiitted this after flatly denying it.
ES&S now says all voting systems should have a paper ballot. But this is not new science-from 2007: "NIST does not know how to write testable requirements to make DREs secure, and NIST’s recommendation to the STS is that the DRE in practical terms cannot be made secure.”
Twelve years later, 3 years after we first learned the Russians were hacking into election systems and ES&S says we should have paper ballots. Sorry, I don’t think they deserve a brownie.
Especially because ES&S’s idea of a paper ballot is a paper summary from their expense, unauditable, unnecessary ExpressVotes. Of course ES&S is calling on Congress to for paper, they can sell more machines. But if we aren’t careful, we will repeat the mistakes of HAVA. Fin.
