Someone asked about crows “anting” so let me quickly explain that one.
Anting is when crows and other birds sit near or on ant hills and catch ants and rub them on their feathers.
Why birds ant is still something of a mystery. We know a couple key things though: the behavior ticks up during molting season and they tend to choose ants that release formic acid.
So our best guesses right now is that the formic acid acts as an anti-parasite and/or it actually soothes irritated skin during the molting process.
So there you have it. “Ant” is officially a noun and a verb. 📸 Deborah Jones
