"Thin blue line" flags aren't patriotic - they mutilate the American flag to glorify the power of the state to enact its will upon citizens by force, which is literally the opposite of what we supposedly founded this country for.
A thin blue line flag should be viewed the same as a Conederate flag:
1. An implicit threat of violence.
2. An endorsement of white supremacy.
3. A betrayal of the best ideals professed by this country.
4. Incompatible with a display of the actual US flag.

News reports that are calling a cop's blue line flag shoes "patriotic" are making a very decidedly non-neutral value judgment.
This isn't even getting into how the blue line myth glorifies lawlessness and a lack of accountability among police, justifying the abuse of the public by people who are supposedly public servants.
