I know how things used to work - how they are supposed to work - at DOJ. Typically, the field US Attorneys’ Offices have considerable freedom/autonomy to follow the evidence wherever it leads and charge wrongdoers, free from political “intereference” from the AG. Of course...
2. We are in a new & dangerous era, one in which the AG acts in the best interest of the president, not the country. Indeed, Barr has become part of Trump’s propaganda/disinformation machine (i.e., by misrepresenting the nature/findings/conclusions of Mueller’s report).
3. Now, in any high-profile or politically sensitive case being handled by any US Attorney’s Office, there will be intense oversight by the upper echelons of DOJ (or what field AUSAs/fed prosecutors call “main Justice” or “main” for short). So this is why I said ...
4. It’s “likely” that AG Barr either approved or at least didn’t kill the federal charges brought against Epstein by the Southern District of NY US Attorney’s Office. That is, unless there is some reason Barr is recused from participating in the supervision of the Epstein case...
5. I’ve seen some reporting that Barr may be conflicted out of supervising the Epstein case for some reason but haven’t seen anything definitive on that topic (if anyone has, would love to hear from you). If Barr does have a conflict, than the Deputy AG would supervise the case.
6. I’m sure we’ll learn more in the coming days. Needless to say, a big-ticket issue moving forward is-will Epstein cooperate w/prosecutors and if so, who can he give up? Whether he cooperates or not, he had better be held accountable/punished for what he did to his many victims.
