Stephen Harper set in motion a creeping incremental political trajectory parallel to and supportive of US cronyism, corruption and corporate control of government here in Canada. Defeating Scheer at the polls won’t change that. It will force the far right to intensify efforts.
Whether we acknowledge it or not, democracy in Canada has been under a sustained attack by the far right for decades.
Consequentialist Libertarians, masked in the “Tory” brand, are aiming to eliminate democratic governance worldwide. Canada is but one nation under threat.
Delivering another Liberal majority or minority will not eliminate the threat to Canadian democracy. The far right is using the same disaffection here in Canada as described by Rothkopf: alienation, fear, frustration, and anxiety.
This is the Finkelstein Method. If you are unfamiliar with Arthur Finkelstein‘s method of securing conservative majorities in nations worldwide, start here: threadreaderapp.com/thread/1129481…
Under Harper govt, Indigenous peoples were pushed to the limits of alienation. Many don’t even identify as Canadian & are actively seeking secession.
Yellow vest working class are continually barraged with messages of their alienation from the economy & fiscal priorities.
Western “alienation” is amplified continually by a conglomerate of far right and Christian demagogues. A concerted effort to foment alienation has existed for at least 8 years. All connected to the far right Libertarian ideology.
Fear is promoted as a state of mind by the far right in Canada. Fear of Muslims, immigrants, sexuality, feminism, socialism, totalitarianism, economic ruin, climate change, electoral reform, etc. Is there anything the far right hasn’t used to foment fear in the electorate?
Frustration is constant. Obstructionism has become a feature of the far right. Corruption & cronyism have become commonplace. Ford & Kenney exemplify corrupt leadership, yet accuse opposition of malfeasance, crimes and coverups. Truth is frustrated by political rhetoric.
Anxiety is at an all time high. Monthly bills are growing and the ability to pay them decreasing. Tariff wars exacerbate cost of living and many have lost hope of success and hope for continued subsistence.
Climate change and the available solutions cause anxiety for all.
Rothkopf is correct. Education is key. Low information voters are manipulated by the far right. It has little to do with their level of intelligence. It’s more a factor of time & reliable information to understand who & what is perpetuating the sustained attack on democracy.
What is one of the first victims to far right ideology? Public Education; primary, secondary and post secondary. Also, media (as a form of public education).
Removal of critical thinking skills. It’s one of the primary targets of conservative policies.
Continuous financial pressures prevent the average citizen from learning the root causes of their struggle. How many have time to research and understand how the last 35 years of policies has shaped their current daily existence & struggles? Few.
Removing universal quality education exacerbates the understanding of Canadian & global politics exponentially. Without critical thinking skills, the electorate willingly accepts ideological rationale for their problems. Blame immigrants, feminism, LGBTQ, liberals, socialism.
Why? Because the rise in numbers of immigrants, women’s mastery in the work force, human rights gains, social justice, exercising of personal liberty, and strength of the middle class all correlate with the chaos far right has been inflicting on the average citizen.
MSM amplification of conservative rhetoric further aggravates the problem. Once trusted sources of information (aka public education) have become beacons of disinformation and propaganda.
How can the average citizen obtain the information to understand what’s happening?
They CAN’T!
Which means as Canadians, we are much further along on the path to autocracy than we are collectively comfortable to acknowledge.
Harper mortally wounded Canadian democracy. At this point in Canadian history, democracy is irrevocably in its dying throes.
For Canada to survive as a sovereign democracy, we MUST do more than defeat conservatives at the next election.
We need to identify the broken foundations of democracy and REBUILD them one by one over the next 4 years. In order to do that, a strong majority is required.
Canadian democracy has 3 main components that are dependent upon convention & tradition: 1. Separation of Powers 2. Legislative Branch 3. Executive Branch
How many know these components well enough to determine their effectiveness? Few.
That must change for democracy to work.
“Our parliamentary government is a collection of the formal (de jure) and actual (de facto) rules.” How many know the difference? Few. That also must change.
MSM focuses on the Executive branch of government. Disregarding the role of the Senate and Judiciary. And the separation between them to ensure power does not reside in the PM or just the executive.
Cabinet and Parliamentary MP’s function as a means for every Canadian to engage.
Every Canadian needs to brush up on civics and how democracy actually works in Canada. If you are aware, please remind fellow citizens how democracy is supposed to work.
CPC knows most will not remember or are unaware of democratic foundations that make Canada the envy of many.
As political junkies, we hold the power to educate at our fingertips. Educate, educate, educate.
Little time is left before the election, but enough time to make a difference.
Pull the Finkelstein mask off and reveal CPC for who they truly are: fascists in suits with crosses.

Ok. So I’m trying to watch CPAC and HOC debate about the EA.
In between aneurysms I’m foaming at the mouth at the level of gaslighting going on.
I so want parliament to change the rules of discourse. Extreme gaslighting should NOT receive Parliamentary privilege.
So what’s driving me mental? The attempt by CPC and Bloc to legitimize the people who performed an occupation of Ottawa and the blockades of border trade routes as legitimate protesters.
I’ve had it with gaslighting and people who try to create alternate realities.
I’m insulted by the unscrupulous mendacity that CPC and Bloc MPs are offering up as commentary. This level of deceit is beyond acceptable, focussed on altering reality for the Canadian public and on legitimization of a fringe hostile mob seeking to effect a coup.
I just watched Noa Mendelsohn Aviv refer to the compromise of civil liberties like freedom of expression on CBC.
Not once have I seen occupiers be denied their right to peaceful protest and to express their opinions. But I’ve witnessed these occupiers torture Ottawa residents.
I’ve heard them make threats against a democratically elected government, attack journalists, flout Ontario mask restrictions causing an entire mall to shut down and put people out of work. I’ve witness horns honking day and night in an effort to torture residents and MPs.
Extortion of policy changes using torturous noise assaults is a criminal offence in Canada.
What about the civil liberties of Ottawans?
Do they count? Or is it just religious extremists & Q’Anon nuts who garner support for their civil liberty to perform a coup?
Liberalism is democracy. The Overton window Canada had from 1950-2000 was a narrow set of acceptable beliefs and values based on welfare state social liberalism and humanism.
Where conservatives were progressive and socialists were centre left.
It’s been abundantly and blatantly clear that this truck convoy was a sloppily veiled attempt at a coup d’état by a bunch of delusional Q’Anon & Dominionists who live in an alternate reality who hijacked a truckers protest.
While many of the participants and most organizers are known racists or support racist nationalist policies, this is not a specifically racist gathering.
It’s an attempt to overthrow the legitimately elected government and create economic and political chaos.
A large portion of rural residents and a significant number of urban residents have adopted this belief system and its values across Canada.
It’s called libertarianism: all restrictions should be removed & each individual makes their own choice based on personal responsibility.
This belief has been thoroughly adopted by The Liberty Coalition Canada among other organizations and ideologies. LCC has made removing Covid mandates one of its demands.
The vast majority of members are far right Christians.
