I have barely read much Hindi or Kannada (languages I learnt at school)

But I do speak them fluently (though neither is my mother tongue

And that's entirely because I learnt them at school

We are too fixated on 'writing'. Focus on learning the language. Not learning scripts
I had written this twitter polemic against this fixation with scripts last year

Whether we like it or not, the generations to come will view the Roman alphabet as their "first" script - the script they are MOST comfortable in

Though a lot of these people won't view English as their most preferred language
So if we seek the health of our vernaculars, we should be open to writing Indian languages using the Roman alphabet

I see that as the way to go. IAST is a lot more critical to the health of Indian languages than often supposed
