Question on Tamil dialects

In the brahmin home I grew up in, it was the norm to say.

"Coffee saapten" (I ate coffee)

instead of

"Coffee kudichen" (I drank coffee)

The latter in my experience is preferred by most other Tamils

Curious on why brahmins prefer to "eat coffee"
Is this merely a difference in dialect across castes?

Or is "coffee saapten" indeed the correct usage?

Does medieval Tamil not distinguish between eating and drinking - Are both generalized as "consumption"?

Questions from a Tamilian who doesn't know much Tamil
Another question - is this observed across tamil brahmins

Or is "coffee saapten" preferred primarily by Sri-Vaishnavas?
