(1/3) My latest @Forbes piece looks at two new studies comparing occupational licensing in #WestVirginia to #Ohio and #Pennsylvania. WV generally has more restrictive licensing than OH, PA. via @CSOR_SFU @CardinalWV forbes.com/sites/adammill…
Higher fees on average across the 64 occupations examined #regulation #occupationallicensing (2/3) Image
One example I discuss is Certified General Appraiser. WV has higher fees and requires one more exam. All three states require a bachelor's degree that doesn't seem necessary (3/3) Image

1/n Is Schumpeter's creative destruction occuring? Mara Faccio & John McConnell of @PurdueKrannert take a long-view look in new paper. Thread with some highlights nber.org/papers/w27871 #Growth #economy
2/n Creative destruction-"In this process, as the norm, firms, including large firms, do not remain the same for long, as they are continuously replaced by new entrants." Yet some large firms remain large for decades e.g. @ATT, @Nestle . How pervasive is this & why does it occur?
3/n Paper considers 3 reasons: 1)Regulatory capture - "large business enterprises exploit the regulatory process to their advantage by, among other ways, erecting regulatory barriers to entry." as explained by Stigler and Petlzman

Here's a crazy thought: Has anyone ever considered that @amazon's dominance is due to the fact that it delivers things accurately and on time at a rate that exceeds their competitors? Because that is my experience.
I'm glad so many agree! To add some context, 2 recent events inspired this. My wife was missing 4 items from a recent Bath&Body works order but she had to call them after a couple days to confirm they made mistake & could ship in another package or provide refund. She took refund
She ordered something from Disney for a trip planned for next yr. Item comes to Arlington, VA but then inexplicably gets sent to MA. She gets on phone with USPS after an hour and they say not sure why that happened, but don't worry, it's coming back. So we'll see.
