Prosecution now starting opening statements in the Will Lewis trial. They are focusing on the concept of duty. “Every local official has a duty to represent the people.” Says Lewis has several duties to the people of Greenville County including good faith and accountability.
Prosecution explains that the charges Lewis is facing are statutory and common law misconduct. wspa.com/news/suspended…
Says Lewis used his power and taxpayer money to pursue an adulterous relationship. “He succeeded at least once by his own admission.” Says jurors need to decide if he did that using county funds.
Says there are some questions whether the sexual encounters between Lewis and Savanah Nabors was welcomed or not. Says the good thing is, the jurors don’t need to determine that in this case. Just if Lewis used taxpayer funds to do so.
Prosecution now going through the timeline of how Lewis and Nabors first met. Says this happened at a law firm they both worked at. Says Nabors looked to Lewis as someone she could trust.
Says Lewis told her then that he was going to run for sheriff and that he wanted her to be his right hand person.
Says Lewis began to offer Nabors perks including a car, salary, fancy meetings. Says Lewis wanted her with him 24/7. “That’s exactly what happened.” Says Lewis hired Nabors for $62K a year. Says the previous administrative coordinator made much less than that.
Prosecution now discussing the details of the trip to Charlotte. This trip is said to have been part of budget talks. Lewis also invited her to come on this trip.
Prosecution saying aside from all of that—the meeting in Charlotte that cost taxpayer money could have essentially been held in Greenville for free.
Says Nabors wasn’t even in parts of the actual meeting that concerned budgetary issues.
Prosecution now talking about the conversation Lewis had with Nabors about potentially taking her to Reno and sharing a room. This is a conversation we heard on recordings during a hearing last week.
“There’s really not another verdict.” Says prosecution. Saying he used public funds to further this affair. Prosecution opening statement is now over.
