Now that the MLB season is over, it's fully hiring season for all 30 clubs. Here are a few general thoughts that I hope will be helpful to aspiring Saberists ($1 to @tangotiger) & other candidates who want to break into the industry... (1/n)
@tangotiger Follow @teamworkonline & @fangraphs; both are vital resources for job postings. Visit the Careers pages on all 30 club web sites frequently; entry-level jobs attract 100's of candidates so postings might not be up for long. Act fast so you don't miss out on opportunities! (2/n)
@tangotiger @TeamWorkOnline @fangraphs Applications & interviews must emphasize skills & results. "Experience" is a trap: WHERE you went to school/worked isn't nearly as important as the skills you acquired & the results you produced. Help a prospective employer see the skills you offer to help them get results (3/n)
@tangotiger @TeamWorkOnline @fangraphs Don’t shy away from your resume even if it doesn't all seem relevant. Ie, worked in food service? You learned customer service, multi-tasking, prioritization & teamwork. Remember, skills matter most: a unique background creates a unique set of skills unlike other applicants (4/n)
@tangotiger @TeamWorkOnline @fangraphs Interested in analytics? R, Python & SQL are the holy trinity of tools in that world. Show off your research & studies; remember that skills & process are the keys here. Specific conclusions aren't as important to a prospective employer as sound approach & critical thinking (5/n)
@tangotiger @TeamWorkOnline @fangraphs If you can get away from school/work & swing it financially, go to the Winter Meetings (this year from Dec 9-12 in San Diego). That’s where employers will be & it's vital for building relationships with the industry. And, it’s really fun. (6/n)
@tangotiger @TeamWorkOnline @fangraphs Even if not at WM, knock on doors. Network. Ask for introductions & recommendations & advice. Everyone in the industry today started as entry level too & knows that's part of the process. Be thoughtful of that support when you get it, then pay it forward when it’s your turn (7/n)
@tangotiger @TeamWorkOnline @fangraphs Finally, don’t get discouraged. The volume of candidates trying to break into this industry is daunting & talent is everywhere. What can YOU offer that no other candidate can? Work hard, don’t lose sight of your goals & stay focused. The rewards are worth it. Good luck! (end)
