I will be covering the #BBCDebate in this thread, but with a little less sarcasm than usual. This is an evening for measured debate.
Caroline Lucas makes a passionate case for immediate action on the environment: "Children can't vote. The planet can't vote."
Rishi Sunak: "We have a new Brexit deal ready to go. We'll bring it back to Parliament before Christmas, and leave the EU before the end of January." He also repeats the "get Brexit done" lie the Tories are pushing as hard as they can.

This is what I was talking about yesterday. The reasons for it are almost irrelevant. It's the fact that he does that is absolutely critical, and disastrous. Because you can complain he doesn't get a fair shake until the cows come home, but that won't change his negative effect.
But his own supporters are too enamoured of him to notice this effect. They're missing one of the most critical factors shaping the whole election campaign.

"Why's Boris Johnson doing so well when he's such an untrustworthy weasel? It's beyond comprehension." No, it's Corbyn!
And that's why Labour's campaign has gone nowhere. It's like trying to drive with the handbrake on. We are in a dreadful mess now because too few people acknowledge it. It doesn't matter if he's loved by 100% of Labour members, that appeal simply doesn't reach a wider audience.

This is true. It's not necessarily the case that we should be "rewarded" for saying I don't know. But that saying should not reflect on the perception of one's overall competence. Tech work is often about learning on the fly to solve the problem at hand.
But we can start to understand how that mindset comes into conflict with other common assumptions about what it means to be an "expert". People often expect experts to demonstrate their expertise by being "right" about any question that gets asked.
We're expected to be "right" about systems that we didn't code, didn't design, have no documentation, and have been changed over time by many different people. It has never been a reasonable expectation. But we haven't found a different way to think about "expertise".

Indians were fed the "Kashmir humara Hain" line. They were never taught "Kashmiris humare hain". Always the land, never the people

Propaganda painting ALL Kashmiris as 'jehadis, terrorists, Pakis, separatists, Islamists" dehumanized them. Thus people are exulting in their misery
2000 Muslims were killed in Gujarat 2002 under an *elected* CM Modi. 5 lakhs+ Muslims were ghettoized. NO Gujarati is questioned about it.

500 Kashmiri Pandits were killed, 3 lakhs exiled by unelected *militants* and ALL Kashmiri Muslims have been held responsible for 30 years.
Needless to say, KP exodus and Gujarat 2002 are both tragedies. Point is not to compare but question how we hold different people to different standards and accountability.

1/ I first gained some twitter followers when I rage-tweeted about an @nytimes article. I stand by that thread, as well as my other critiques of the Times. However. . . . .
2/ I also feel badly that I don't give the Times more credit when they publish excellent journalism. I *do* believe there are some systematic issues w/ the Times right now, particularly w/ regards to a subset of the domestic politics reporting, the OP-Ed page, twittering, etc.
3/ However, they have also done excellent investigatory work (post-election) on the Trump campaign's connections w/ the Russian government. I think it's difficult to fully comprehend just how difficult this work is, given the degree to which it relies on sensitive sourcing. . . .
