On the day the Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to Peter Handke, I wrote a story that included an idea I haven't come back to, until now. It's the connection between the 1990s Serb nationalists who are defended by Handke and the white nationalist violence in today's world:
Handke tries to reposition the actions of Radovan Karadzic and other war criminals. They were not monsters, he says in his books & interviews. That's false. And scarily, these war criminals have become inspirations for contemporary killers like those in Utoja and Christchurch.
I'm returning to this idea because of an essential thread today from @ivanavicvic, who notes that the @NobelPrize organization, by honoring Handke, strengthens a violent ideology that's killing people right now -- and close to home.
"When more children, like those in Utoya or Christchurch, lose their lives to the tunes of 'Remove Kebab' - you will not have the luxury to speak of 'literary accomplishments.' For you will have helped to make this fascist and racist ideology our generation’s new normality."
It's clear that the Nobel organization, the royal family, and the Swedish Academy do not really care what happened to the Muslims of Bosnia decades ago. I now get that. But what Karadzic, Mladic, and Milosevic started in the 1990s is still alive, and getting stronger.
For more on the connections between Serb nationalists -- the ones whom Peter Handke wishes we would consider more sympathetically -- and the violent white nationalists of today, my colleague @MazMHussain has written an article that is pretty definitive. theintercept.com/2019/09/01/bos…
