Over the weekend #PuertoRico was hit with more tremors and aftershocks resulting from the magnitude 6.4 earthquake on January 7th. There are nearly 80, 000 veterans on the island that could have been affected by these events. washingtonpost.com/national/puert…
Last year, Chairman @RepMarkTakano visited #PuertoRico to meet with veterans and examine VA’s disaster-preparedness capabilities. He also saw firsthand the lasting damage from #HurricaneMaria and what VA may need to prepare for future disasters. Image
@RepMarkTakano The effects of these natural disasters can be felt long after-- especially when the infrastructure is already compromised. Power outages and home damage can put veterans needing electricity for medical devices or refrigeration for medication at higher risk.
@RepMarkTakano VA has been providing water and food assistance to residents on the island since the earthquake struck. @VetAffairsDems will keep working to ensure VA is prepared for any future disasters as well.

Many veterans who served in Afghanistan have received direct requests from Afghan allies to establish eligibility for a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV).

(2/8) SIV applicants must be able to prove that they have at least one year of qualifying employment by, or on behalf of, the U.S. government. The majority of SIV applicants are in this stage of the process.

Last week, @TheAtlantic reported that @realDonaldTrump called more than 1,800 marines "suckers" because they were killed at Belleau Wood.

Lt. Weedon Osborne (@USNavy) was a dentist attached to the 6th @USMC Regiment.

During the Battle of Belleau Wood, Lt. Osborne died in an effort to carry a wounded Marine to safety.

He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor & is buried at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery. Image
At Belleau Wood, GySgt. Fred W. Stockham noticed his wounded comrade's gas mask was inoperable.

GySgt. Stockham took off his mask and gave it to his comrade and later died from poison gas exposure.

His sacrifice earned him the Medal of Honor. Image

Last year, @BetsyDeVosED rewrote the Borrower Defense rule, making it harder for student veterans to receive debt relief or be forgiven for their student loans.

@RepSusieLee's resolution prevents this rule from going into effect.

@realDonaldTrump vetoed this resolution.
That is why today, the House will vote to overturn this veto.

@RepSusieLee's resolution stands with students – especially student veterans – who were scammed by predatory schools and left with a mountain of debt.

THREAD (1/9): Today, the @WhiteHouse PREVENTS Task Force unveiled its report regarding veteran suicide.

This report – advanced w/ limited input from Veteran Service Organizations or lawmakers – shows we have much more work to do to prevent veteran suicide & save veterans' lives.
(2/9) Calls for more research, interagency coordination, & meek public education campaigns are not enough.

That’s why the Committee adopted a 7-pillar framework to ensure it examines every angle, intersection, & factor that can eliminate suicide. Learn more about the approach ⬇️
(3/9) One of these pieces of legislation is Chairman @RepMarkTakano's Veterans' ACCESS Act.

This bill makes sure that any veteran in crisis – regardless of discharge status or VA eligibility – can receive the emergency #MentalHealth care they need without ever seeing a bill.
