Truly, if you are an individual who insists on calling this hospital sandwich 'ultraprocessed junk' you really need to a) learn how to interpret a food label, b) read up on ingredients c) stop commentating in public on matters on which you have little knowledge or understanding
Well, this tweet certainly has brought *interesting* replies. So many carefully trying to explain their food prejudices with emotive justification. A few, to a person with no nutritional qualification to their name, being just plain rude. Pretty normal food-fight behaviour
A post-surgery sandwich - like this #refusetolink is common in surgical wards. The sandwich order on one general surgery ward peaked on Tuesday lunchtime - when Monday's elective GI surgery patients started to eat again. Pragmatic ordering by nurses as hot meals rarely consumed
Patients need to eat just when they're more likely to have post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV). The reasons for PONV are multiple, but the dietary approaches proven to work are similar ... Easy to eat. Soft. Little aroma. Sandwiches tick that box ucsfhealth.org/education/diet…
Sometimes people want to eat. But delayed stomach emptying increases the risk of nausea and vomiting, too
But early nutrition support -24-48h post surgery - has important physiological consequences. Little to do with nutrition per se. Everything to do with the local GI and distal immune response. This is well established for all types of surgery (bar neurosurgery) #ERAS
So let's come back to that #NHSeggsandwich. Contains egg. Wheat and soya flour bread. Mustard. Two added minerals. Four added vitamins. Meets the 'traffic light' profile for total and saturated fats, salt and sugar. Kcal profile: 46% fat/ 36% carbs/ 16% protein.

Yes- that #NHSeggsandwich is a perfectly acceptable small, low residue first meal post-op. But there's plenty of alternatives from a typical #NHS menu if that's not to your taste..... PS: one meal doesn't a lifetime diet make. Just leverage to demonstrate opinions @MattHancock
