A lot has been happening in #space recently: @SpaceXStarlink project, the @SpaceForceDoD, people afraid about Kessler effect etc I decided to document myself and it does play a lot in my usual theme of #datasphere and its #decentralization. Thread to read !
the following article, In French, prompted my research. There are actually spying activities in space between nations/companies. Satellites get close to one another and listen in. nextinpact.com/news/108662-je…
Interesting ! A lot is happening up there we don't really think about.
There are about 2000 active satellites around earth, most in #lowearthorbit (below 2000km) and a fair share in #geostationary (36000 km). But space is much more crowded than that (lot of debris). This map shows you many objects and their orbit maps.esri.com/rc/sat2/index.…
now @SpaceXStarlink (@elonmusk) wants to deploy a huge web of LEO satellites (tens of thousands) in order to provide global low latency internet coverage. You can find a great explanation on how this would work here hackaday.com/2020/02/20/how…
Additionally, Starlink will sell us a device that will allow us to connect directly to the satellites. You own your connexion. In the future, we could imagine a #decentralized web of satellites co-owned by many companies/individuals. Just like you run your #bitcoinnode
While many are mocking this effort (polluting our sky to decrease latency in video games, I've read), there's a lot of applications to this. And as usual many we cannot foresee currently. #Internet isn't just about sending letters faster than mail.
the masterpiece of @dannsimmons #Ilium and #Olympos has a lot on satellites in orbit, used to beam human code all over the world. We can only begin to imagine what we can do with this. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilium/Oly…
We are only in the early beginnings of the space economy, but it will get very serious very soon. I encourage to read #DeltaV, and excellent and extremely well documented (although it's SF) book by @itsDanielSuarez on how space industry will start. goodreads.com/en/book/show/4…
Something I'd like to remind: we sent a probe to a comet, it had to travel for 10 years and clocked 5 bilions km. it then dropped a lander on the comet, transmitting to us. That was the #Rosetta mission. So much was achieved already.
hope you enjoyed the thread and it gives you ideas. my thanks to @adamscrabble for his many quality threads that inspired how I did mine.
