The problem with this kind of homophobic humor isn’t that it’ll hurt Pete’s feelings—he can handle it. The problem is that it sends a message that there is a right and wrong way to be gay, which can be extremely harmful for young queer people navigating their sexuality.
If you are a closeted young person coming to grips with your sexuality, the last thing to need to hear is that some gay people are the wrong kind of gay and deserve scorn for it. Especially if you live in a community that does not embrace LGBTQ equality. It’s a toxic sentiment.
Also, no one seems to be policing the straight candidates’ sexuality. Probably because everyone knows it would be deeply offensive to say that a straight male candidate is acting too flamboyant and not straight enough. Their heterosexuality is never questioned or mocked.
Anyway look, I wish Pete would drop out, I will not be voting for him in the primary, but young and vulnerable queer people do not need to hear your jokes about his sexuality, which are inherently homophobic and toxic and actually pretty retrograde.
