PP: I knew what I was getting myself into when I accepted this position.The person who nominated me said I have the capability. My mother was initially not supportiveShe was worried that I’d be under pressure, that people would swear at me, given how some treated my predecessor.
PP: In the end my mother said go for it. I was ready to serve, I had been serving for a long time dealing with issues around the plight of asylum seekers, refugees. It is a sacrifice.
PP: There was wisdom in what my mother said about taking on this role. But she said to me ‘God has your back’. She is one of my pillars. I’m keeping on because of her prayers.
PP: You won’t be loved by everyone. People will always have their issues about your work. It’s understandable that some people will react in a particular way to your findings.
PP: It was unfortunate that our former COO did not understand the mandate of the office. The PP is compelled by the law to investigate Executive Ethics matters and finalise them within 30 days. It’s not that they are prioritized for any other reason.
PP: There is no such thing as the PP interfering in investigations. The PP appoints investigators in terms of the PP Act to assist her. She then delegates her investigative powers to them. They operate under her supervision.
Mr. Samuel was supervising the Investigator who worked on the Vrede matter. The investigation was finalised in 2015, long before I became the PP. The focus of the investigation was always compliance with the PFMA and the agreement with Estina by the HOD or Accounting Officer.
We’ve published the provisional report that I found when I joined the office. It is dated 2014. You won’t find any allegations or findings against any politician in that report. We are now investigating the role of politicians following a complaints by the portfolio committee.
PP: Regarding my removal, I am advised that the rules adopted by Parliament are unlawful and unconstitutional. For instance, some MPs are conflicted. They are litigating against me, I have made findings against some of them and others have pronounced themselves on my integrity.
