Right, well I’ve got #COVID19 now, laid out for the last 24 with coughs, aches etc. Feels like a mild flu. Total isolation now, and be vigilant especially if you’ve had contact with me recently.
Thank you for all your lovely messages. We are withdrawing the kids from school, which they were ecstatic about until my son realised I am quarantined in the PlayStation room.
Update: A bit rough, but ok, my daughter much the same. It’s not much fun but we’ll be ok. Immunosuppressed or vulnerable people need to avoid this like the plague, and the only tactic that worked for the plague was quarantine.
Update Day 4: this is going on longer than I thought. Still pretty crook, I ache like I’ve run a marathon. I haven’t run a marathon. And I have itchy ears 🤷🏽‍♂️
@amsterdammed will be remotely standing in for #bbcinsidescience today though I had already done some of the interviews including with the wonderful @NeilShubin on his new book Some Assembly Required. It’s wonderful.
Update Day 5: myalgia is the main thing now, notably pronounced lower back pain, and bit of residual fever. This hasn't been fun at all. Do not recommend.
Coronavirus is what scientists refer to as 'a fucking twat'.
Day 6: significantly better. Less pain, and had a decent night’s sleep. A review:
I seem to have got hit quite hard, I know others have had milder symptoms. That is probably the sickest I’ve ever been. I’m generally fit-ish and young-ish, and it knocked my for 6. But that’s an important point.
You can’t be macho about a virus. We don’t know enough about the biology of #coronavirus to predict how it will affect you personally. Only that the immunocompromised and elderly will be struck worse.
Another thing: I have an amazing loving caring family who have looked after me. My cosmically incandescent wife has run the house and my brilliant unruly children without skipping a beat. Friends have brought food round.
Not everyone has that. Everyone needs that.
It’s fairly miserable, so think of friends, neighbours and family who are isolated and even ill.
We talk about the mortality rate in the abstract. This means people will die, as indeed they are already.
I’m not engaged enough with what’s going on on the ground to offer community support, cos I’ve been poorly. But once I’m back to full capacity I’ll share any links or schemes that you send me.
1) stay isolated, cos
2) you don’t want this, take it from me
3) support others, from a distance
4) ignore grifters, billionaire pub landlords and fake tough guys. They know nothing.
5) the frontline workers, particularly health workers, scientists and teachers, are gods who work among us.
It is through their work that we will prevail.

I salute you all.
