At a time when #Hydroxychloroquine has become the miracle drug that the world wants from #India, thinking of my brother-in-law Ranajit Gooptu’s family - descendants of Dr. Dwarkanath Gooptu (GMCB, 1818-1882) who invent and patent an anti-periodic mixture prescribed for #malaria.
Dr. Gooptu was one of the favourite students of David Hare (who founded the Hindu School and Presidency College) and educated under his care at the Hare School in Calcutta. Debendranath Tagore (Rabindranath Tagore’s dad) was his contemporary at the school.
In 1840 the first indent of Messrs. D. Gooptu & Co. and his firm owned the first known dispensary of “English drugs” in India. The flagship product of the company was the patented anti-periodic mixture, commonly known as " D. Gooptu Tonic”.
There is a mention of the patented 'D.Gooptu medicine’ in 'Sri Sri Ramakrishna Kathamritha', which says when Sri Ramakrishna was suffering from malarial fever (1879-80) he got relief from the fever after taking the medicine (traditional ayurvedic medicines were not effective).
Oh yes forgot to mention that West Bengal’s Advocate General of 15 years - Naranarayan Gooptu - is his great great grand son.
Because so many of you liked and shared the tweets, here’s some exhibit related to the product:

1. The original marble bottle for the D Gooptu anti-periodic mixture that also treated malarial fever:

2. The company guarantee certificate with dosage for adults and children.
