1/6 A federal court hearing on April 10 could force the Trump administration to release thousands of detained migrant children after several contracted #Covid19. It’s brought new attention to the decades-old fight over the conditions in which these minors are held.
2/6 In the 1980s, as increasing numbers of Central Americans, including children, fled to the US to escape violence at home, human rights lawyer Carlos Holguín began investigating conditions he considered appalling. Watch:
3/6 Holguín and lawyer Peter Schey sued the government. The case made its way to the Supreme Court, resulting a decade later in a consent decree known as the Flores settlement agreement, after one of the original plaintiffs, Jenny Lisette Flores. Watch:
4/6 Holguín and other lawyers have relied on the Flores agreement over the years to protect detained migrant children. When the Obama administration ramped up family detention, Holguín and his team sued the government again, and won.
5/6 Now Holguín is battling President Trump, who has repeatedly attacked the Flores agreement and has even tried to get rid of it to detain children and parents indefinitely. But Flores continues to remain in force.
6/6 Now, as detained minors and some staff members are testing positive for #Covid19, lawyers are seeking to speed the release from detention of children who have eligible custodians. Holguín & his team are spearheading one of the efforts.
