We share early reflections from New York City, the epicenter of the US #COVID19 epidemic, with the aim of helping other parts of the country and the world confronting the same suffering. @DrKatzNYCHH @JAMA_current {thread} jamanetwork.com/channels/healt…
1/ Public Health and Health Care Delivery Are Intertwined
#COVID19 brings this into sharp relief. The effectiveness of social distancing translates directly into the number of sick patients in the emergency departments and intensive care units.
2/ The Primacy of Clinician Morale
Flattening the curve, raising the line, and other COVID-19 strategies sometimes overlook how fundamentally important morale is. If clinicians lose trust or motivation, the health care system buckles, no matter how many beds are available.
3/ Health Equity Is not a Sideshow During COVID-19, It Is the Main Event
Multiple signals emerging in COVID-19 outcomes confirm what has been seen before: in times of crisis, those already living on the margins are most likely to be harmed. nytimes.com/2020/04/09/nyr…
4/ From Analytics to Intelligence
Intelligence is more than numbers; it's whatever it takes to enable sound, real-time decisionmaking. But has also been humbling to interrogate our own reactions to promising results. One person’s confirmation bias is another's glimmer of hope.
Despite the physical isolation associated with COVID-19, it has crystallized how we are “caught in an inescapable network of mutuality,” to invoke MLK. This network must be global—in the same way #NYC learned from China, Italy, et al. all of us must do our part to pay it forward.
