Hello readers,

I already have ~290 #CovidFoodSecurity/#FoodSystems articles documented in my 1st thread. It breaks a bunch; click on the "last" tweet you can see & it will reveal more & more.

Gonna start a new thread here.

An update on Red River flooding in Manitoba; we've had dry weather (and so has ND, I presume), and sounds like there's very limited overland flooding as the water level peaks. Rural towns in the area have ring dykes & are dry. 👍

Update on the Cargill meat plant story -

The Cargill, JBS, and Harmony Beef plants in Alberta (all of which have Covid cases) represent ~3/4 of beef suppliers in Canada.

Wet seasons increase impacts of pests or disease for certain crops.

Last year was wet on the NE prairies.

Climate change forecasts indicate we can expect increased fall precipitation here as the impacts worsen.

Ethanol plants are taking less corn at the moment (due to less gas being used).

Not food security impacts, but agriculture nonetheless.

The people who sell/repair farm equipment are just as susceptible to Covid-19 as the rest of us, and they're part of the #FoodSystem, too.

The average age of farmers in the US: 58.

In Canada: 55.

Rural populations are older in general, and underserved with hospitals.

This is written with a common-sense tone, but the last part is what terrifies me about broadacre farming with an aging pop of farmers.

"You get one shot to get it right" whether you're healthy or sick & many farms don't have many hands doing the work.

Again, this thread is an attempt to collect journalism documenting the entirety of the food security situation evolving amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

So THIS is a headline that should have been written differently, for the vast, vast majority of the population to catch what they're trying to describe.
