#WindydayConcept ?
1) Worker coop factories in all cities to build batteries, solar panels, wind & tide turbines, tiny homes. Local farms & hemp, linseed & bamboo to replace plastic. This was talked about in 2009, but Oil Lobby & Davos have & are blocking.
#WindydayConcept ?
2) Don't believe Oil Lobby lies about batteries & SP.
They're over 85% recyclable, pay back on energy investment in 2 years, then give back for 25 years, their is enough electricity to run an all EV world.
Yes you have to heat them, & they use minerals
#WindydayConcept ?
3) How much electricity does your ICEV use? Over 43% of all electricity used of oil industry, they use massive amounts of chemicals for fracking & tar sands, they heat some TS fields over 400°C for weeks or months.
Fossil fuels NEVER pay back, always a cost.

#ClimateChange activists plan to cause rush hour disruption in #London’s financial district on Thursday before they bring an end their climate “rebellion” that has led to protesters occupying sites across London for more than a week.

Their climate “rebellion” to highlight the escalating global ecological crisis will draw to a voluntary close with a “closing ceremony” & a day of disruption in which demonstrators plan to swarm into the Square Mile to cause roadblocks, targeting big business & banking.

The activists said protesters had taken to the streets & raised the alarm in more than 80 cities in 33 countries. “People are talking about the #climate & #ecological emergency in ways that we never imagined,” they said.

This is weak sauce -- an ahistorical false dichotomy. As my friends @NaomiOreskes & @MichaelEMann note in #ClimateChangeTheFacts: evidence alone has floundered in the face of 30y of climate denial & delay by fossil fuel interests & conservative ideologues. Let’s debunk. THREAD
2/n: First, @Anna_Soubry's point is ahistorical: The assertion that facts alone will win the day is contradicted by scholarship & experience, including history of climate politics, climate psychology, communication science, political science, & decades of advocacy & policymaking.
3/n: As I testified to EU Parliament last month, the fossil fuel industry has *known* the basic facts of climate science for 60 years: that its products, when used correctly, had the potential to cause catastrophic global warming.

I've been pretty impressed with @BBCScotNine since its launch, but their insistence today on wanting to put a hard right climate denial lobby group on air to discuss the #ClimateStrike was a serious mis-step. [thread]
Naturally all serious potential contributors to this discussion refused to help them give a platform to climate deniers:

Today is both Christchurch and #ClimateStrike.

Let's talk about how they are related.

"If there were a button I could press, I would sacrifice myself without hesitating, if it meant millions of people would die."
- Pentti Linkola, Finnish 'deep ecologist'

CW: climate, violence
On climate change, there is no more ambiguity. It is not a future abstraction. It is happening now. We have entered the time of real consequences.

It is no longer possible to ignore climate change.

This will provoke responses. From the left, from the center, and from the right.
There are multiple possible responses to the climate apocalypse already in progress.

The ECOSOCIALIST response,
the ECOMODERNIST response,
and the ECOFASCIST response.

These do NOT map 1:1 with the traditional political spectrum.

Let's address each one of these in turn.

On #ClimateStrike day some thoughts from a pragmatic environmentalist.

One of my big concerns with the climate strike is that it is being driven by people who ignore the complexity of the energy debate and instead talk about simple answers to complex problems. #bcpoli #abpoli 1/
I keep listening to the demands of the Climate Strikers and it is all about stopping all fossil fuel use now and blaming the previous generations for the conditions of the present. Well that approach ignores the realities of our era #bcpoli #abpol 2/
We currently have a transportation (and thus food supply) system that is utterly dependent on fossil fuels and will be for 20+ years. So we need to figure out how to address non-transportation uses while we innovate in transportation uses. #bcpoli #abpoli 3/

Today, young people worldwide are protesting climate change, and there’s a good reason why: If climate change continues to go unchecked, average global temperatures will rise 4 degrees by 2100. That’ll be very, very bad. Here’s how: #climatestrike 1/
Middle America is about to undergo a drastic transformation. In parts of the Midwest, farms will produce less than 75% of the corn they produce today, and Chicago will start to resemble Phoenix, with up to two months of 100-degree days 2/
California’s Central Valley, America’s principal source of fruits, vegetables, and nuts, will become uninhabitable for those plants. Labor-related losses from extreme heat could reach $155 billion annually 3/

A thread about exponential growth in honor of today's #ClimateStrike.
One of the many ways complex systems fool people's intuition is because of the exponential growth behavior generated by reinforcing feedback loops, where change feeds back on itself to create more change.
Exponential growth is the reason for all the warnings and worry about tipping points in the climate system where, after some point, warming creates more warming, regardless of human mitigation efforts.

There's a conspiracy theory circulating about the #ClimateStrikes: the children can't possibly be organising and thinking for themselves. Someone must be controlling them. 1. Not one shred of evidence has been adduced to support it. Why? Because there isn't any. Thread/
2. The strikes took us veterans by surprise - and they fill me with hope of a kind I thought I'd never feel again. If the young people ask for help, we'll provide it. But they are the leaders now, and we are the followers. They have the moral authority.
3. Have you any idea how patronising and condescending this sounds? Children aren't capable of acting in their own right? The young people organising today are the most inspiring, determined group I've ever come across. They should be honoured, not insulted. #YouthStrike4Climate

Young climate warriors: This Friday, you may be launching the largest coordinated protests of young people and children in history.

The future you're fighting for? That's what I've spent my life working to see.

I'd like to share some truths, from an old warrior to younger ones.
1. First, you're right. You're right to strike; you're right to march; you're right to feel your fear and rage and longing for a better world.

You are the victims of a monstrous intergenerational crime, and you are as right as humans can be to demand justice.
2. You are so right that—even though I'm a tough-skinned veteran of three decades of this fight—your truth brings tears to my eyes.

You should know that there are millions of older people whose hearts are with you.

You should know you are not, in any way, alone.

So, a bunch of folks want your kids to walk out of school tomorrow. To protest for a #GreenNewDeal

what they are actually marching for. First and foremost they are marching for a bunch of folks whose livelihood depends on not-for-profits. I have researched some of these orgs, and there are board members clear a $500K a year. For example one board member from /2
Climate Works, a major bundler in the space whose funds flow through hundreds of local and national activist organizations, made $485,673 on the last tax filing we found. The organization's total comp was $2,828,022 for 10 board members. Not bad for selling something no one /3
