RCMP confirm that the violent mass killings in Nova Scotia started when the gunman assaulted someone who they describe as a person known to him. That person managed to escape and hide in the woods. Global News has reported this was the gunman's girlfriend.
RCMP say they initially found one male with a gunshot wound leaving the area (who was attended to, taken to hospital and survived), then found a number of victims on the road and at homes. Suspect's home and garage were near by and were fully engulfed in flames
Global News reported the gunman had access to at least one handgun, rifle and shotgun. RCMP confirm the gunman had access to handgun and long barreled weapons.
RCMP confirm that witness in the early morning (Global has reported this is gunman's girlfriend) they spoke with a witness who revealed Wortman had a police car, uniform and multiple pistols and long guns.
The gunman shot the injured Cst Morrison when he pulled off thinking Cst Heidi Stevenson was approaching him. He managed to drive away to get help. Constable Stevenson engaged the gunman. He killed her. He stole her gun and mags. He then set both cars on fire and shot a bystander
Stevenson and Morrison were planning to meet at the location Morrison was shot. That's why he thought the marked police car, which was the gunman, was Stevenson approaching. Police say he was shot. Global News sources have said he sustained gunshot wounds to his arms and chest
RCMP say that one of their tactical officers killed the gunman after spotting him pulled in at a gas station. As Global News has reported, this was by chance. The police stopped there to fill up. The gunman had pulled into a previous gas station, seen RCMP and left.
Police confirm the person who escaped the gunman and later informed police was a female in a relationship with him.
Police describe the gunman's attack on his girlfriend as a "significant assault," it could have been the trigger point and was the first violence that night but they are also not discounting pre-planning.
RCMP say critical incident command team thought they had contained the shooter the night before, they thought it was possible he had committed suicide and was in one of the homes that was on fire.
