An article by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (@CBCNews) implied that "Canadians" (plural) see an @EpochTimes edition as racist, but only cited a single reader and did not provide any evidence from the edition itself. That hardly seems fair. archive.is/OBNUt
Then they corrected the headline to something more accurate (and humorously unnewsworthy). @andreabellemare @jason_ho_to @KatieNicholson cbc.ca/news/canada/ep…
But the authors failed to fix a caption and failed to promptly issue a correction as required by journalistic ethics. "Acknowledge mistakes and correct them promptly and prominently. Explain corrections and clarifications carefully and clearly." @ejnetwork @insinews @spj_tweets
Sloppy work - hope the authors improve their reporting next time, especially when writing about a religious minority under horrible persecution in their homeland.
To top it off, @CBCNews broadcast video with the banner "Canadians Upset by Epoch Times: Paper falsely claims COVID-19 a Chinese bioweapon". But the @EpochTimes articles do nothing of the sort. Read them here: offers.theepochtimes.com/ccpvirusreport…
The closest @EpochTimes gets is an article that quotes a Chinese general in the early 2000s who said China is developing #bioweapons against the US. The author simply asks the question whether that ambition is linked to #COVID19. That article is here: theepochtimes.com/did-chinas-pla…
CBC changed the title again, which is now at odds with the text and photo caption, which has only one Canadian reader calling the ET edition "racist and inflammatory". Where are "Some" Canadians? I only read about one in the story. @andreabellemare @jason_ho_to @KatieNicholson
One of the two relevant sources, a postal worker, is granted immunity by the authors - which should be avoided according to journalistic ethics. The authors reprint the source's comment even though it is factually incorrect.
What the author is actually saying is that the Chinese government has not been transparent on any linkages that may exist, and that more investigation is needed. He explicitly leaves open the possibility that China's officials are innocent.
